Benjamin Sesco controversially scored the Red Devils’ second goal and was substituted during the half-time break as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-2.

Michael Carrick has revealed why Benjamin Sesco was substituted during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool. Sesco, 22, was replaced by Amad at half-time in Sunday’s Premier League match.

The striker put United 2-0 up with a controversial goal, but midway through it appeared the ball grazed his fingertips. The law states that if the scorer touches his hand or arm, the goal is disallowed.

However, VAR ruled there was no conclusive evidence to overturn Sesco’s 11th goal of the season and his second of the game. However, the Slovenian was unable to add to his tally after the break and Carrick blamed a collision with a billboard for his substitution.

“He hit his shin when he fell to the side of the pitch,” the Red Devils manager told MUTV. “That’s something he’s had for a little while as well, so we’ve had to manage him a little bit, but he’s definitely banged up in the same spot. It’s a real no-brainer.”

Carrick told Sky Sports after the match: “He had a bit of a problem with his shin for a while, but that was when he got pushed into the reservoir and fell to the bottom. That was it.”

Sesco scored in the comeback win at Old Trafford earlier this season and will be hoping to recover in time for Saturday’s visit to Sunderland. However, with United already qualified for the Champions League, there may be no risk to the £74m deal.

Victory against Liverpool meant that no team outside the top five could catch United, who surrendered a two-goal lead before Koby Mainu’s late winning goal in front of the Stretford End. “There was a lot of good work to put us in position and close it out with three games left,” Carrick added.

“But that’s not something we really talked about as a group. I don’t think it’s something we celebrate too much. I think this is a step. We want more.”

“We want to finish at the top of the league and certainly a lot of credit goes to the players and staff for getting us to this position at this stage.”
