Manchester United sealed their return to the Champions League with a dramatic victory over Liverpool in the Premier League with goals from Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesco and Koby Mainu.
Manchester United defeated Liverpool and qualified for the Champions League. This means the Red Devils have earned £15.7m in wages after a year without European football.
Manager Michael Carrick has completed the task he was given when he was appointed manager of the club following the departure of Ruben Amorim, with three games remaining. United cannot drop below fifth place in the Premier League and currently sit in third place with 64 points.
Brighton’s loss to Newcastle meant they could cement their place in Europe’s top competition with a draw against Liverpool. However, Carrick’s team went into the fight looking for victory and soon found themselves gaining an advantage over their rivals.
At Old Trafford, Matheus Cunha opened the scoring after just six minutes, and Benjamin Sesco extended the lead to two after 15 minutes in controversial circumstances. The Red Devils had a dominant first half against Arne Slott’s side.
But Carrick may have been a little nervous when Liverpool hit back in the second period. Dominik Szoboszlai scored soon after the restart, before Kodi Gakpo took advantage of United’s sloppy play to equalize.

It was a man trusted under Carrick who stepped up to help United move closer to European status. Koby Mainu calmly slotted the ball into the corner with the top of his foot from a distance to give his team the lead.
Carrick said he didn’t want his team to over-celebrate the moment of Champions League qualification after coming so close to qualifying. “The Champions League is important, but it’s not something we should celebrate too much either,” he said.
“We really want to finish at the top of the league and challenge for the top of the league and get more points so the season doesn’t end.”

United last appeared in the Champions League in 2023/24, when they were not eliminated from the group stage. They recorded just one win against Copenhagen, but suffered defeats against Danish sides Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
They finished eighth in the Premier League that season and would only qualify for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup. They eventually reached the final of that competition under coach Amorim, but lost there to Tottenham.
Their European performance fell short domestically, as they finished 15th in the league this season, finishing outside of Europe.
