Tim Sherwood says new warning could mean Tottenham remain in League One

Tottenham have had a disastrous season and are still under the very real threat of relegation to the Championship, with former star Tim Sherwood believing things could get even worse for the north London side

Manager Tim Sherwood has warned that Tottenham could fall to League One if they drop out of the Premier League. The North London side are having a miserable season this season.

With only four games remaining this season, they are currently in the relegation zone, two points behind West Ham United. And former Spurs player and manager Sherwood has genuine concerns that things could get even worse without stability off the pitch.

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, he said: “It’s worrying. It depends on who is in charge of recruiting and running the club. There are no guarantees for the people currently running the club for me to give you an educated answer as to whether they will come back.”

“If the football people came in and ran the club, certainly they have the resources and are entitled to the responsibility of getting back on their feet, but if they don’t get back on their feet quickly, as you said, it’s going to be very difficult.

“There are huge clubs that have fallen there and stayed there for years. Tottenham will come back. They haven’t fallen yet. If they fall, they will come back. They will come back.

“In my opinion, it needs to be the first try. And I think it’s the club that can do that. But we need to change the decision-makers to make that possible.”

“Leicester just shows what can happen if a club is poorly managed. That’s Leicester. Even if the club is poorly managed, if you look at their squad at the moment, they should never be in a relegation battle in the Championship. It’s a real shame. It’s a shame.”

“A hugely successful team over the years. Not only did they win the Premier League, they also won the FA Cup. What they achieved was incredible and it’s mind-boggling to imagine that team being in League One. Just 10 years ago they were lifting that big trophy. They were poorly managed, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch.”

Leicester are the latest of only five teams in Premier League history to have been relegated from the Premier League consecutively. They followed Luton Town, who finished in the third tier just 12 months after dropping out of the Premier League last year. Others include Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swindon Town.

Spurs received a huge boost on Saturday in avoiding that fate as West Ham lost 3-0 to Brentford. Roberto de Zerbi’s side face Aston Villa on Sunday, joining Leeds, Tottenham and Everton before the end of the season.
