Ryan Reynolds has explained why he is “completely heartbroken” after Wrexham narrowly missed out on a Championship play-off place. The final day of the regular season was played on Saturday and Wrexham had a chance to finish in the play-offs and compete for promotion to the Premier League.

However, the Welsh club were forced to pick up a point with a 2-2 draw at home to Middlesbrough, narrowly missing out on the play-offs.

Boro took the lead with a goal from Tommy Conway before Wrexham equalized with a goal from Josh Windass.

Sam Smith then gave Wrexham the lead just before the half-time break, but Middlesbrough equalized through David Strelek’s goal and they shared the points.

As a result, Wrexham finished seventh in the Championship in their first year after promotion from League One, just two points behind sixth-placed Hull City who clinched the final play-off spot.

Reynolds, who is co-owner of Wrexham with fellow actor Rob McElhenney, took to social media to express his disappointment at the club failing to qualify for the play-offs and, as a result, missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

“Totally disappointed with today’s result, but extremely proud of this season,” Reynolds wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“We have come a long way in five years. This was the best result in our 150-year history. There is still work to do, but for now the Reds have much to be proud of.”

This is the first time since Reynolds and McElhenny’s second season as Wrexham’s owners that the club has failed to secure promotion at the end of a season.

The pair completed their purchase of the club in February 2021, when Wrexham were in the National League and finished eighth at the end of that season.

The following year Wrexham finished second, before losing to Grimsby Town in the play-offs.

Since then, Wrexham have achieved three successive promotions starting in the 2022/23 season, taking the club from the National League to the Championship.

Reynolds, McElhenny and others are hoping to push for further promotion in the Championship next season and will begin preparations for their campaign in the United States during pre-season with games against Liverpool, Leeds United and Sunderland.
