Anthony Gordon, Reds’ ‘dream’ raid boosts Liverpool’s stance, clear | Soccer | Sports

Former Everton winger Anthony Gordon has come close to a move to Liverpool in the past and now former Reds star Didi Hamann believes it may be time to reconsider a move. England international Gordon has previously been close to a move to Anfield and has openly spoken of his admiration for Hamann’s former teammate Steven Gerrard, despite spending his teens and early 20s playing for the club’s local rivals. A £75m move from his current club to Liverpool looked looming in the summer of 2024, but the deal ultimately fell through. Gordon agreed a contract extension soon after and helped Eddie Howe’s side qualify for the Champions League, before going on to score 10 goals in Europe this year.

The winger, who is firmly in contention to represent England at this summer’s World Cup, is widely expected to leave St James’ Park this year, with Bayern Munich reportedly among his clubs. RB Leipzig winger Yann Diomande has also been linked with both Liverpool and Bayern, with Hamann suggesting the Ivorian would be a great signing for the Reds. Nevertheless, the Champions League-winning midfielder does not rule out the possibility of his former employers “dreaming” of acquiring both Diomand and Gordon in the same transfer window.

“There’s a place for Anthony Gordon at Liverpool,” Hamann told NewBettingOffers.co.uk. “Liverpool need a player in that position and I don’t think there are many better players in the Premier League than Anthony Gordon. He’s played up top sometimes. He’s versatile, he’s a great player.”

He also suggested there would be little difficulty for Diomande to establish himself in the Premier League, especially if Liverpool’s passionate fan base rallied behind the £86m-valued forward. A second plunge would cost Liverpool well over £100m, but Hamann was enamored by the prospect.

“It would be a dream summer for Liverpool if they could sign Diomand and Anthony Gordon, but they have to be careful,” he added. “Last season, after the success and the signings the previous season, I thought there was no way they wouldn’t win the league. But certainly, if they get these two guys and stay injury-free, I think they’ll be fine for the next few years.”

Gordon spent a short time in Liverpool’s academy, before moving from Liverpool to join Everton at the age of 11. He comes from a family of passionate Liverpool supporters and has spoken openly about this in the past.

Appearing on Sky’s A League of Their Own panel, Gordon said: “I don’t have any family members who support Everton. There’s no one, no one. It was very strange because they were all Liverpool.” “So I was at Liverpool and they let me go at the eleventh hour and then Everton signed me.

“As long as they were losing, we were fine. Just like when I scored, they were like, ‘Even if you score a great goal, we still want you to lose.’ My family are really, really bitter Liverpool fans.” Gordon also mentioned Liverpool in April 2025 when he did a Roommate Quiz with England teammate and Reds midfielder Curtis Jones. Jones accurately identified Gerrard as the winger’s footballing hero, prompting Gordon to remark: “I think he’s every Scouser’s idol, don’t you?”

It wasn’t the first time the former Everton winger had spoken of Gerrard in such glowing terms. This topic also came up when he appeared on “Overlap” and spoke with former England national team defender Gary Neville.

“Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” Gordon said. “He came from Liverpool and was a god-like figure at Liverpool, an unbelievable player.”
