Manchester United ace Mason Mount makes ‘big mistake’ and challenges Michael Carrick | Soccer | Sports

Mason Mount has been accused of making a “huge mistake” after speaking of his title ambitions given Manchester United’s form under manager Michael Carrick. The caretaker manager has enjoyed a strong period at the helm of the Red Devils, who are certain to qualify for next season’s Champions League. They lost only twice in 13 games under Carrick and averaged 2.23 points per game under his direction.

Mount, who has struggled with minutes due to injury in recent months, believes Carrick has finally unleashed his true potential for United. He recently told ESPN that he believes he can challenge for a Premier League title in the not too distant future. A decision has yet to be taken on Carrick’s future, but the England international believes domestic glory is within reach.

“I have a goal to win the Premier League,” Mount said. “Of course, I have already won the Champions League, but can we (win the league?) Yes, I think as a group we can win it.

“We have to have that kind of mentality. It may seem a little far, but we have to have that kind of mentality to really push ourselves as a group.”

“We’ve already shown what we can do against big teams like Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. So we’ve done it. We’ve already proven it this season so we can definitely do it.”

“Now it’s important to do it on a bigger stage in the Champions League and do it more consistently in the Premier League.

“I hope I can play a big part in moving forward next season. Yes, that is the goal. I want to win the Premier League.”

Mount’s optimism was then dashed by Jamie Carragher, who is far from convinced United are finished.

The former Liverpool defender said in his latest Telegraph column: “Even the most enthusiastic United supporter will understand that our chances of winning the Premier League or Champions League next season will depend on who takes charge this summer.”

“You can list the best managers in the world, past and present, but no one will look at United’s current team and believe they can win 20 league titles or even come close to winning Europe.

“It would be a huge mistake to take one look at the league table and claim that finishing third means a title challenge is imminent or that United could face Bayern Munich or PSG in the near future.”

United are aiming to win the league to celebrate their 150th anniversary in 2028, but there is still a lot of work to do before they take on the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal throughout the season.
