Manchester United suffered from a disastrous season last time, signing the £60 million Mason Mount is eager to put the calamity of his injury behind him to help bring the club back to its former glory

Mason Mount says the Manchester United player is determined to make up for the “scars” of last season’s worst Premier League finish.

United finished 15th last season, finishing their lowest finish since being relegated in 1974, missing out in Europe after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. Mount’s two seasons at United were ravaged by injuries after making a £60 million move from Chelsea, but he said he was determined to prove himself under Reuben Amorim.

“The whole season hurts,” Mount said. “But this is now a new slate. We look forward to the performance. We want to play as a group. Last season wasn’t enough, so now we’re going to kick.

“When you leave in the summer, you’re always looking at what you can do better, how you can get better for your teammates and perform as a group, how we all perform better. Last season, it wasn’t enough. We know that.

Mount was out for four months midway through last season, but is determined to return to the starting lineup towards the end of the campaign and become a regular under Amorim. United spent £133.5 million to attack duo Matthew Us Cunya and Brian Mbemo, but Mount helped them compete with them for their departure location next season.

“When you’re at a club like Manchester United, you need a competition to play there and as a group we want to win, we’re all together,” Mount said. “The new young people who have come in are great training so far, and the first few weeks are by no means easy.

“It’s about uniting them into the group and making them feel as comfortable as possible. I think we all did that. They’ve done great things in training. They’re coming to the Premier League and the games, and they know what’s hard to do in the Premier League.

“We tried to try that because last season we didn’t achieve or support those goals as much as we could,” Mount was asked how long it took United to overcome the 1-0 loss to the Spurs in Bilbao.

“But that’s about seeing what we can improve. In the finals, the little things that happen in the game, and it’s like they’ve got a bigger impact. It was tough. But that’s about looking forward to it now and really using this preseason and working on a lot of things that we didn’t get enough time to do last season.

“When managers come in the schedule, games and mid-season, this pre-season period is very important as a group to work on things.”
