Coventry City are set to beat Newcastle in the race to sign goalkeeper Karl Rushworth, with Premier League newcomers expected to be in the running for his signature.

Rushworth is currently on loan at Coventry Building Society Arena and has played a key role in their promotion efforts. With Frank Lampard’s side clinching the Championship title, attention quickly turns to next season and the permanent goalkeeper.

Newcastle have also been keeping an eye on Rushworth, sending scouts ahead of a potential summer move, but their hopes were dashed when the Evening Standard reported that Coventry were frontrunners and the goalkeeper himself was keen to extend his stay at the club.

Although he would have to sign with parent club Brighton, Frank Lampard has been instrumental in Rushworth’s development and the Englishman is reportedly keen to continue working with the Chelsea legend.

Rushworth’s permanent deal is expected to be the first signing of an active summer transfer window for Coventry as they aim to cement their place in the top flight for the first time in 25 years.

Rushworth’s stock is so high that he turned down approaches from Arsenal and Manchester United to sign for Brighton from Halifax Town in 2019. He is close to being called up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in March and is likely to remain in contention if he continues to impress.

Earlier this season, Rushworth etched his name into Coventry’s record books. He broke the club’s longest scoreless streak, breaking Horace Pearson’s record of 608 minutes set in 1934.

Newcastle are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping team

Newcastle themselves are looking to recalibrate their goalkeeping situation ahead of a summer that could see big changes. They missed out on their top target in James Trafford, who returned to Manchester City from Burnley last summer.

They then acquired Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton, making 11 appearances in the Premier League. Nick Pope, the team’s number one for most of the Eddie Howe era, has played in 22 games and remains first choice. Newcastle endured a forgettable summer last time out, seeing a number of targets leave elsewhere, which has hampered their efforts this season.
