Liverpool need to replace Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window and Jermaine Pennant believes they should do everything in their power to sign Bayern Munich star Michael Oliseh

According to the Germain Pennant, Liverpool should do all they can to lure Michael Oliseh to Anfield this summer to replace Mohamed Salah. Salah will be leaving the club at the end of the season and will have a big role to play.

The Egyptian star has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances for Liverpool over the past nine seasons and could already have played his final game after sustaining a hamstring injury at the weekend. The pressure is on for Liverpool’s recruitment team to deliver after last summer’s window didn’t have the impact they hoped for.

Liverpool manager Arne Slott has already said finding a direct replacement for Salah is “probably impossible”, although RB Leipzig star Yann Diomande is among the players being considered.

Olise made 47 appearances for Bayern Munich this season, posting an impressive 20 goals and 29 assists, following Tuesday night’s 5-4 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals. He joined from Crystal Palace in 2024 for £51m and is under contract with Bayern until 2029, but Pennant believes his former club should take the chance.

After watching Oliseh score a spectacular goal in a dramatic game, he tweeted: “Liverpool go now and get Oliseh at all costs. There is a replacement for Mo Salah. At any cost. Add Gakpo to that mix.”

Codi Gakpo has received considerable criticism from Liverpool fans this season, with just eight goals and six assists in 48 games across all competitions. He still has four years left on his contract with the Reds.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the pennant’s enthusiasm was not well-received, with many asking why Olise would want to trade Bayern for Liverpool now when Liverpool had just won the Bundesliga title with Canter and had a chance of winning the Treble.

Bayern certainly don’t want to let go of one of their star players either. “Of course,” Bayern CEO Max Eberl said recently when asked if Olise would stay. When asked if his answer would remain the same even if he received a huge offer, he replied, “Yes, I don’t have time to think about anything.”

Pennant’s plea follows Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s glowing praise of the Frenchman. “When a full-back plays against a winger, the opponent usually has a weak side, so depending on the opponent’s footing, they will show it to the opponent in some way,” he said on TNT Sports.

“His problem is that he can move in either direction. His right foot is as strong as his left. You want to show him with the right foot, which is probably his weaker side, but you can also see some of the assists he’s getting, finishing with his right foot. If you leave him in one-on-one situations, you’re going to run into big problems.”
