Liverpool’s owner FSG showed a cruel side by sacking the coach and five members of his staff.

Liverpool’s owner, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has taken drastic action against one of its sports franchises, the Boston Red Sox, after firing team manager Alex Cora and five members of the coaching staff.

The baseball side has endured a disastrous start to the new season, currently sitting at 10-17 (10-17), and despite a blowout 17-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, calls were made to relieve Cora and his backroom staff of their duties.

Cora, himself a former Red Sox player, made an immediate impact when he took over in October 2017, helping the team win the World Series in 2018. He will be replaced on a temporary basis by Triple-A Worcester manager Chad Treacy, the Liverpool Echo reports.

“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the best seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and we will always be deeply grateful to him for that and in the years that followed. He has had a lasting impact on this team and this city. He has led in so many important ways on and off the field,” John Henry, head of FSG and chief owner of Liverpool FC, said in a statement.

“These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived. We want to thank Alex, the coaches, and their family for everything they have given to this organization. They are part of this club in ways beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude.”

Following Cora’s firing, Saturday’s 16-point victory represented the sport’s largest winning margin in the modern era in the last game supervised by a major league manager.

It also marks the first time the Red Sox have fired a manager mid-season since Jimmy Williams suffered the same fate in August 2001.

FSG owns a number of global sports franchises, including Liverpool FC, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as teams that compete in NASCAR racing and the TMRW Golf League (TGL).

FSG has owned Liverpool since 2010 and has overseen two Premier League titles and the Champions League trophy. However, the group has recently come under increased scrutiny from supporters over a planned increase in ticket prices. Supporters protested the decision during Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace, which included a yellow card inside Anfield.

Questions have also been raised over transfers this season, with big-money transfers of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike under manager Arne Slott failing to bear fruit. The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League with four games remaining and will end the season without a trophy as their title defense is extinguished.
