England fans could be forced to pay a dizzying £1.7 million if they want to buy tickets to this summer’s World Cup final.

FIFA’s official resale platform has given supporters the opportunity to purchase tickets for select matches in the tournament, which is just a few months away from starting. Prices are already high and the spiral continues. Some tickets to the final are priced at an exorbitant $2,299,998.85 (£1.7 million) per seat.

Four tickets lined up behind the goal at MetLife Stadium appeared on stage earlier this week. FIFA doesn’t actually set the price of resale tickets, but they do take a 15% reduction from the purchase fee and a 15% resale fee from the seller, meaning they will earn a £2 million commission if the ticket is sold.

In a statement, the tournament’s governing body said: “FIFA has established a ticket sales and secondary market model that reflects standard ticket market practices for major sporting and entertainment events across host countries.

“The applicable resale promotion fees are in line with industry standards for North American sports and entertainment sectors. FIFA’s variable price ticket sales approach is consistent with industry trends in various sports and entertainment sectors, with price adjustments made to optimize sales and attendance and ensure fair market value for events.”

This summer’s tournament has been criticized for out-of-control pricing for tickets and transportation. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has regularly defended the pricing strategy.

“We had six to seven million tickets sold and we had 150 million ticket requests in 15 days, so we had 10 million ticket requests every day. This shows how strong the World Cup is,” he said.

“In almost 100 years of World Cups, FIFA has sold a total of 44 million tickets. So in two weeks they could have filled 300 years of World Cups. Just imagine, this is just crazy.”

He added: “Importantly, the revenue generated from this goes back into the game around the world. Without FIFA, there would be no football in 150 countries around the world. It’s because of these revenues from the World Cup and from the World Cup, and because of the World Cup, that football exists and it’s being reinvested around the world.”
