Manchester United could hold a small but meaningful advantage in their bid to sign Aurélien Tchoameny, and it goes beyond his transfer fee and wages. The Real Madrid midfielder, 26, is rumored to be linked with a £65m move to Old Trafford as United look to strengthen their midfield ahead of next season.
With Casemiro set to leave the club in the summer, reinforcing the center of the park has become a priority. Choameny ranks high on United’s target list, but convincing both the player and Real Madrid, who consider the French international to be key players, to part ways will not be easy. Nevertheless, United Airlines can offer more than financial incentives and can appeal to friendliness and status.
Casemiro’s departure means Choameni will immediately be able to take possession of the number 18 shirt he wore during his first two years in Spain. The jersey number 14, previously held by Christian Eriksen, will also be free. Most notably, Choameni wore No. 14 for Madrid before switching to No. 8 in 2024, and also wore it for France.
Of course, shirt number alone won’t guarantee a move, but United could also emphasize a positive trajectory. The gap between them and sixth-placed Brighton is huge, with Champions League qualification within striking distance, and confidence is growing after a strong comeback under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.
Broader plans are also in the works. The defense was strengthened in 2024, followed by the attack in 2025, and now the focus is clearly on the midfield. At least one signature is expected, but several options are being considered.

Elliott Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Carlos Baleva (Brighton) are among the names mentioned. But Choameni has quickly risen to the top of the priority list in recent weeks.
The Whites midfielder’s contract runs until 2028 and Real Madrid are said to be keen on extending his contract. Still, United could open talks if his long-term position is in doubt.
United’s interest is nothing new. They closely monitored Choameni during his time at Monaco before moving to Madrid in 2022, where he developed into one of the most accomplished midfielders in the game.

Securing his signature now would require a significant financial commitment, both in terms of transfer fees and wages. But United Airlines’ financial position is stronger than it seems.
The expected departures of Casemiro and Jadon Sancho (with the possibility of Marcus Rashford also leaving) will create significant room in the wage structure.
For Choameni, United’s message is simple. It’s about rebuilding the club with a key role in the team, familiar elements and purpose – not just pursuing success, but building on it.
