Sunderland were told why Daniel Ballard’s goal was disallowed during their humiliating 5-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Friday night. Ballard thought he had a goal against Regis Le Bris’ side at the Stadium of Light, but a foul in the build-up had his goal canceled.

Sunderland conceded four goals to Forest in the first half and went into the second half with a 4-0 lead as the Black Cats looked to improve their place in the bid for European qualification. Instead, Trey Hume’s own goal and strikes from Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White and Igor Jesus gave Forest the advantage on the weir side.

Le Bris’ side fought back in the second half and appeared to have a goal in the 61st minute with Ballard’s close-range finish. However, the shot was ruled out after a VAR check as Nordi Mukiele committed a foul on Forest goalkeeper Mats Sells.

The X’s official Premier League match center account said Ballard’s goal against Sunderland was canceled due to a foul on Mukiele, quoting referee Darren England who announced the decision inside the Stadium of Light.

The post read: “Following a VAR review, the referee has reversed the original decision of the goal against Sunderland.” “The referee’s announcement: “After review, Sunderland’s number 20 committed a tripping incident on the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper. The final decision was that the goal was disallowed and the free-kick was disallowed.”

Sunderland lost 5-0 with Elliot Anderson scoring in the final minute. The defeat leaves the Black Cats in 11th place in the Premier League table, but they could fall further depending on the weekend’s league-wide results.

Forest’s victory takes them further out of the relegation zone and they remain in 16th place, six points behind 17th-placed West Ham and eight points behind 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, whose final relegation spot is still undecided.

Burnley and Wolves have already been confirmed to be relegated to the Championship, with one other club still to finish in the bottom three of this season’s Premier League.
