Manchester United are making plans for the summer transfer window, but club legend Bryan Robson has revealed that signing a top target will not be easy.
Manager Bryan Robson has warned Manchester United that Newcastle could thwart their bid to sign Sandro Tonali this summer. Tonali, 25, is one of several names on United’s shortlist as they search the market for a new midfielder.
The Red Devils need a replacement for Casemiro, who will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires in June. Former Newcastle star Elliott Anderson is also on United’s shortlist, along with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Tonali has the experience and the trophies, but it will be difficult to judge him from St James’ Park. Robson explained on the Talk of the Devils podcast: “There’s always quality players out there (in the Northeast) and once the scouts see these players, you just hope you actually get them.
“Anderson is definitely a player on the charts and Adam Wharton is down at Crystal Palace. The problem is that you can get people you want to have at your club, but sometimes the transfer fee is huge and sometimes the club doesn’t want to sell.”

The former United captain added: “Looking at Tonali at Newcastle, we’ve had quite a relationship with him at United as well. For a club with a lot of money like Newcastle – they’re sold out and getting paid $60,000 every game – do they really want to lose a player like that?” Because then they have to replace him, like we have Bruno Fernandes. ”
Tonali was linked with a surprise move to Arsenal on the eve of the transfer deadline earlier this year, but ended up staying on Tyneside. His agent Beppe Riso has also publicly hinted at the possibility of a move in the near future.

The Italian international is under contract until 2029 and spent £55 million to sign for AC Milan in 2023, before being suspended for 10 months for breaching gambling regulations. There is no doubt that Newcastle would like to profit from selling Tonali, but Magpies manager Eddie Howe believes Tonali is committed.
“I’m always talking about things with the players,” Howe explained. “I don’t necessarily discuss transfer speculation unless I feel it’s at a point where I have to do so.
“After talking to Sandro, I think the biggest thing I’m looking for is a commitment to training, because I think the players will perform if you see the commitment to training ground work.”
