Despite the remarkable nature of Aston Villa’s campaign, with Unai Emery’s side looking poised to reach the Europa League semi-finals and qualify for the Champions League at the same time, Sancho played a peripheral role in that achievement. Sancho has drawn a blank in the Premier League, scoring just one goal and providing three assists in 33 games. That means he has scored just three goals in English top-flight football over the past three years.
With Sancho’s future uncertain, Sky Sports’ Germany correspondent Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Sancho is ready for a third spell at Dortmund and that the former England star has agreed to return to Germany, possibly on a free transfer.
Plettenberg have reportedly reached an agreement with Sancho despite accepting various offers, with Dortmund manager Niko Kovac already giving the green light for the winger’s arrival. However, he pointed out that the final decision to return Sancho to the Bundesliga rests with sporting director Ole Book and chief executive Lars Ricken.
Ricken, who has devoted his entire 15-year playing career to Dortmund, had already confirmed the club’s interest in Sancho in an interview with Sport Bild. “We’re looking at a lot of players right now and analyzing them to see if they can make us better. We’re doing the same thing with Jadon,” the executive said recently.
“Of course, we are looking for attacking players who can bring quality and help immediately and who do not require an unrealistic transfer fee. Defensively, Niklas Süle will be leaving the team and Emre Can will also be out for a while, so we are thinking in that area as well.”
The best moments of Sancho’s career came while wearing the black and yellow shirt, as he scored 53 goals and provided 67 assists in 158 appearances during his two years at Dortmund. Former teammate Marco Reus even encouraged Sancho to represent the club again.
The former Germany international, who left Dortmund to join LA Galaxy in 2024 after 12 years at the club, sang his praises as a footballer and urged his former teammates to breathe new life into his career at the club.
In an interview with Sport Bild, the 36-year-old said: “My main advice to Jadon is to look for a place where he can feel at home again and rediscover his form. And if that is BVB, it will be good for him and good for Dortmund! I have rarely played with a player who instinctively and in difficult situations makes such good decisions.”
