Koby Mainu quadruples Manchester United salary with INEOS U-turn | Soccer | Sports

Koby Mainu has agreed a new contract with Manchester United that will quadruple his wages. The England midfielder has been negotiating with club officials for the past three months. Mainoo is said to be willing to sign a long-term deal worth £120,000-a-week that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.

The development marks a stunning reversal of fortune for Mainu, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Sunday. Just a few months ago, Mainu was on the verge of leaving United and joining Napoli on a six-month loan until the end of the season.

Mainu had become disillusioned with life at Old Trafford after former head coach Reuben Amorim repeatedly ignored him. The midfielder feared that Amorim’s reaction would seriously hinder England’s chances of making the World Cup squad.

However, after Amorim was sacked and Michael Carrick was appointed caretaker manager, Mainu chose to remain at United.

Manager Carrick reinstated Maynou into his starting XI and the youngster has since played a key role in United’s rise to third place in the table.

Carrick is reluctant to get involved in contract negotiations regarding players, but is keen for Mainu to be rewarded with new terms. Carrick is understood to have spoken to club officials to convey Mainu’s long-term value to the club.

Carrick also supported the club’s decision to give Mainu a significant pay rise, reflecting his importance to the team now and in the coming years.

Mainoo regained his place in the England squad last month and is growing increasingly confident of securing a place at the World Cup in North America in June.
