Rob Edwards had hoped to complete a great escape with Wolves, but relegation was made official after Saturday’s away defeat to Leeds and West Ham’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace.
Wolves will be playing Championship football next season as their relegation from the Premier League has been confirmed. Rob Edwards’ side lost 3-0 to Leeds on Saturday, with West Ham’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday the final nail in the coffin.
Tottenham were thwarted by Brighton at the weekend, ensuring that Wolves will remain top of the table for a bit longer. West Ham need a point against Crystal Palace on Monday to end Wolves’ eight-year stay in the top flight, confirming what seemed inevitable even when Edwards took over in November.
The 43-year-old was poached from Middlesbrough following the sacking of manager Vitor Pereira. Edwards, without a win after 11 games, took over a Wolves team that was languishing at the bottom of the table with just two points between them.
Protests against the club’s ownership have become a regular occurrence at Molineux, and chief executive Geoff See ultimately resigned in December. Edwards lost his first seven games, and ultimately ended the rot with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Manchester United in his final match before the new year.
Wolves had a glimmer of hope with four of their remaining 13 games remaining, but their failure to beat Leeds left them at the mercy of their relegation rivals, leaving the Hammers to do the necessary work.
Molyneux’s costumes enjoyed a fleeting moment of celebration in an often forgettable season. They played against Arsenal in February and came back from a 2-2 draw with a goal in stoppage time.
A few weeks later, they achieved their only back-to-back wins of the year. They first defeated local rivals Aston Villa, but just a few days later they beat Liverpool with an injury-time goal from Andre.
Wolves could still have influence over who gets relegated when they next host Tottenham. The North Londoners currently sit in the bottom three, above Burnley, who themselves have long been seen as destined to fall.
