Michael Carrick Why it’s ‘ridiculous’ and ‘absolutely ridiculous’ not to give Manchester United a job next season

Matheus Cunha’s first-half goal gave United their eighth win under Carrick since Ruben Amorim took over as caretaker manager, increasing the gap between them and sixth-placed Chelsea to 10 points.

“Realistically, I think it’s secured,” Cole told TNT Sports. “It would be foolish to think we wouldn’t give it to him.

“He came in and scored more points than anyone on the other team. What more can he do?”

“It would be totally absurd, it’s not gambling, it would just be absurd (to not give it to him), he’s proven that.”

Former United midfielder Hargreaves further highlighted Cole’s comments, claiming it would be “absolutely ridiculous” to consider anyone else.

“He’s proven he can do the job,” Hargreaves said. “Since he took over they have become the best team in the Premier League. They beat Man City and Arsenal, the two best teams in the division.”

“He has shown that he can game plan on the counter and obviously they did something similar today.

“Cara understands the players and that’s probably why he’s here. He understands the pressure of playing at this football club.

“He puts players in the right positions they need to play to be successful and excels in all abilities.

“So it would be totally ridiculous to give it to him and then not give it to him at a point where you probably wouldn’t expect it.

“I think today confirmed that. If they hadn’t won today and qualified for the Champions League, we might have had a discussion and maybe brought in more experienced players.”

“If today is over and he finishes third, I don’t understand why they didn’t give him the award. It would make no sense at all.”

Carrick explains the impact of change

Carrick, like any head coach, is just taking his job one game at a time.

“You can’t take that lightly. That was big. It was a big win for us,” he told TNT Sports after Saturday’s win.

Carrick has picked up more points than any other Premier League manager (26) since taking over in January.

The former England international was asked to explain how he was able to change the club’s fortunes this season, having already matched this season’s winning tally before joining.

“I want them (the players) to feel good and understand and appreciate playing for this great club,” he explained. “Sometimes it’s easy to forget the position we’re in.

“And we’re trying to make it fit for everyone. I think we can play better and I think there’s going to be a lot of depth.”

“We have good players, a good team, and we just want to keep improving.”
