United grow into teenagers despite remaining defensive issues
Aiden Haven is the Red Devils’ only recognized centre-back and the visiting team will be trying to cope without a number of big names.
With Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez suspended, Lenny Yolo and Matthijs de Ligt also suspended, the 19-year-old will partner Nousair Mazraoui in the heart of a makeshift defence.
Elsewhere, Koby Mainu and Brian Mbeumo return, while Manuel Ugarte and Amad Diallo are on the bench.
United manager Michael Carrick was asked about his team selection by TNT Sports’ Jules Breach before kick-off.
“Hopefully it’s just a small thing, but he (Lenny Yolo) is clearly not ready for tonight. That’s part of football too, so we have a pretty good squad in terms of injuries. We have Lenny, we have Matthäus (de Ligt) who is a little bit longer. We have Patrick (Dorg) who is out, because of the two suspensions, so all of a sudden we have less options at centre-back, but we can adapt and make the most of it.”It’s an important game tonight, so we’ll prepare for it.
“We have to adapt and make the best of it, that’s part of it, sometimes things are thrown at you and you have to deal with it, that’s one of the things tonight.
“We know what we’re facing here. It’s always a difficult place for us to come here and get a result. It’s important for many reasons. We have a strong team and we’re looking forward to the game. It’s good to have Coby back. He’s played a big role for us lately, so it’s good to have him back.”
Regarding the fight for Champions League qualification, he added: “I’m not really concerned about playing the game, just the game itself and the result will take care of itself.”
