Manchester United got their wish last week after Harry Maguire signed a one-year extension to his contract. The majority of the team felt it would have been “insane” if the experienced defender had not been offered a new contract. The 33-year-old went through a difficult period under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, but has regained popularity.
The centre-back, who joined United from Leicester for £80 million, has proven to be an influential leader under manager Michael Carrick. Maguire has set the standard for his team-mates, who are reportedly pushing hard for the England international to sign a new contract. A source told The Sun earlier this year: “The players think it would be crazy if he wasn’t offered a new contract.
“Harry has endured a lot of ups and downs at United, but he’s come through it all and played really well. He’s highly respected in the dressing room and passes on a lot of knowledge to young players like Aiden Haven and Lenny Yolo.”
“Everyone likes and respects him and the majority of players want the club to sign him.”

Reports emerged that AC Milan were interested in Maguire during the January transfer window.
But speculation over his future has finally come to an end after the defender agreed a new contract with United last week. His previous contract was scheduled to expire at the end of this season.
Maguire said: “It’s great. Obviously, it’s my seventh year. To be at this club, to play one game for this club, it’s really special. So it’s been seven years here and it’s going to be eight years and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“The focus now is to finish the season big and strong to put us in a good position going into next year. And we have to make next year better, more positive and more special. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Maguire’s new contract will give him a warm welcome in the senior dressing room as he secures a return to European football next season. United’s resurgence under Carrick has been extraordinary for supporters, with the club firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Maguire believes the team has turned a corner and believes 2026/27 will be a “special year” for the club.
He added: “I feel we are in a good place at the moment. I believe the club is on a forward curve and I want to be part of that.”
“When I leave the club, I want to leave in a good place and that’s the most important thing. It’s not about me, it’s not about me personally. It’s about the team and the club and I want to leave in a good place.”
“If we continue to work hard and recruit well in the summer, we feel like next season could be a special year. We have a big summer ahead of us, but like I said, we want to focus on this year and make sure we’re in a good position for next year and make next year a special year.”
