Victor Gokeres spoke to the media after Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday. One of his statements went viral on social media.

Victor Gokeres has been ridiculed after Arsenal’s heartbreaking defeat against Bournemouth, with the dry pitch believed to be the culprit. The Gunners lost 2-1 to the Cherries on Saturday, potentially opening the door to Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Gokeres scored from the penalty spot after a handball from Ryan Christie, but Arsenal suffered a heavy defeat at home. Junior Crupi put Bournemouth ahead early on, before Alex Scott scored the winner with a fluid move and a cool finish.

Arsenal’s £64m summer signing had several half-chances in the closing stages of the game, but was unable to find the equalizer for the second goal. The defeat means City can close the gap to six points with a win over Chelsea on Sunday and a trip to Arsenal next weekend at the Eisad Stadium.

Gökeres was one of the Arsenal players to confront the media after the match, and his interview on Match of the Day quickly gained social media attention. “We had some good chances at the end,” he said. “To be honest, the pitch could have been a bit dry so that didn’t help, but of course, like I said, we all need to do better and take our chances.”

The comments were cruel. One reply read: “Kind of dry? Are you serious? Both teams are dry. Come on.” “Brother doesn’t remember it being his house,” a second wrote, while a third joked: “Maybe he should have poured a bottle of water… oh I forgot – they don’t have bottles.”

Gökeres and his teammates will turn their attention to Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against former club Sporting, before the most important game against City on Sunday.

Asked about Arsenal’s turnaround after losing three of their last four games, he said: “I’m very confident.” “I don’t think we need to dwell too much on what happened today. We need to look forward, think positively and look forward to the game.”

Gökeres also spoke to TNT Sports after the loss. “I really think we could have played better in both halves,” he said. “We didn’t control the game well enough, and they’re a good team, so when we get our chances, they’re going to make it difficult for us. So we had to do better, and of course we had to work harder offensively.”

Asked if Arsenal were disorganized, he replied: “Yes, I think we had a good feeling before the game and we had everything ready during the game, but they made it difficult for us and they made it difficult for ourselves. That’s why the end result was like this. It always hurts when you lose.”

“We still have a lot of games left and we know how good we are. We just have to show it on the pitch. We have to get back into a rhythm where we can believe in ourselves and play.”
