Tottenham are reported to be favorites to sign Andy Robertson this summer on the condition that they retain their Premier League status. The Scottish full-back has announced he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, ending a trophy-laden nine-year spell on Merseyside.
A number of clubs have started circling to sign him on a free transfer, but The Athletic claim Spurs are in pole position to sign him. However, their pursuit will naturally depend on whether they can avoid the drop. Spurs were in talks to bring Robertson to north London in January, but Liverpool refused to allow him to leave midway through the season.
The 32-year-old will leave the club without a fee when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Spurs face the difficult task of maintaining their place in the top flight, currently in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone.
Following the firing of Thomas Frank and interim head coach Igor Tudor, they turned to Roberto de Zerbi to save the day.
Robertson confirmed his departure earlier this week, saying: “Leaving a club like Liverpool is never easy. It has been a huge part of my and my family’s lives for the past nine years, but I know football will move on.”
“I know the team is moving on and it’s time for me to move on too. I’ll always look back on the great memories I have at this football club. I’ve put my heart and soul into the club and, given the chance, I just wanted to make the people of this club and the supporters proud of the left-backs who perform week in and week out.”
“I know that my journey is coming to an end. It’s been an incredible journey but I’m not going to give up. This club means everything to me, the fans mean everything to me, the people associated with the club mean everything to me and until my last day I’ll give everything I’ve done for the last nine years to the football club, I think I owe them a debt.”
“I’m going to look back on the last nine years with a big smile on my face, but yeah, it’s been a hell of a journey. Especially in the last year or so, I had the opportunity to leave but I didn’t take it because of how difficult it was to leave this club. And I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
“But I know football moves forward, I know the team moves forward, and I think it’s time for me to move on and go to my next transfer or wherever my career takes me. I’ll always look back on the great memories I have at this football club. I’ve given my heart and soul to the club for nine years and I don’t have many regrets.”
“I have grown as a man and as a person. This club will always mean the world to me and the fans will mean the world to me. This has been a hell of a journey.”
Robertson cemented his place among the club’s modern legends by joining from Hull for just £8.5m, a sum now widely considered to be a bargain.
