Manchester United are keen to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window and, with some smart business, this could be the perfect opportunity to move towards one of their long-term goals.
Manchester United could be involved in a summer deal that sees Joshua Zirkzee move to Atalanta in a swap deal for Ederson. The Dutchman had a disastrous few seasons at Old Trafford.
Zirksee, 24, has scored just nine goals in 69 appearances for the Red Devils and has started just four games this season. The former Bologna and Bayern Munich star has been regularly linked with a move, with reports in Italy claiming Atalanta have emerged as suitors for him.
According to Tutto Atalanta, the Serie A side are planning a summer transfer and the striker is considered an ideal addition to their frontline. It could face competition from domestic rivals Roma and Como.
However, Atalanta could be first in line given the Red Devils’ interest in midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian has long been linked with United and with just over a year left on his contract at the club, Atalanta could be open to cashing in on his contract in the summer.

He could be drafted to replace Casemiro, who is due to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires. Manuel Ugarte has also been linked with a move away from the club this summer.
However, United could face competition if they make a move for Ederson. Atlético Madrid sporting director Mateu Alemany recently confirmed that the club is also interested in a move. “He’s another addition to the list of great players we have,” he said, as quoted by Marca newspaper.
Earlier this season, United manager Michael Carrick suggested Zirksee still had a role to play and a swap deal could be frozen. He said, “Yeah, I’ve said it many times, but I think the whole team is very, very important.”

“We understand that some players played a little more than others, but that doesn’t mean that’s going to be the case for the rest of the season. I thought Nous in particular came in and played as well as he’s ever played, so I’m happy for us and for him. Josh came off the bench again and made an impact, just like he did at West Ham.”
“I think that’s part of it. We need everyone. We have a lot of talent on the team that we can call on when we need it. I’m really happy for everyone on the team. I have to say, yeah. To see them come together and have spirit and everyone making an impact in different ways is what we want.”
