Manchester United have confirmed Harry Maguire has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract, taking a break amid uncertainty over his future. Maguire, 33, is in the final months of his existing contract and looked destined to leave as a free agent this summer.

However, the England international has been given a new term until June 2027 after making a remarkable comeback under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. United also retain the option to extend his contract by a further year. Maguire explained: “Representing Manchester United is the greatest honor. It’s a responsibility that makes me and my family proud every day.”

“I am delighted to be able to extend my career at this great club for at least eight seasons, continue to play in front of our special supporters and create even more great moments together.”

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting team. The determination across the club to fight for major trophies is clear for all to see and we are confident that together our best moments remain ahead of us.”

Carrick has been a key part of the team since his arrival in January and his impressive performances have helped the Red Devils move to third place in the Premier League. Maguire has also earned a call-up to the England squad, putting him firmly in the World Cup berth.

The centre-back joined United from Leicester in 2019 for a record-breaking £80m. Maguire was appointed club captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer within a year of joining the club, before being replaced by Bruno Fernandes in 2023 during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox added: “Harry embodies the mentality and resilience needed to perform at Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings valuable experience and leadership to our young and ambitious team. Harry, like everyone at the club, is fully committed to helping Manchester United achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire remains one of the most commanding figures in United’s squad, having led them to their last two trophies: the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Earlier this season, Carrick described the 33-year-old and his wealth of experience as “invaluable”.

“Harry is a memorable character,” Carrick said. “He’s had a great career so far and hopefully there’s a lot more to come. I think even in the time he’s been here, and in the journey and experiences he’s had since coming to England, he’s shown exactly what he is.”

“The experience is huge. It’s hard to put a price on it. Harry has gained so much experience at this club. Case’s departure is also an event and we need to understand what that means.”

Maguire is currently in Dublin with the rest of United’s squad as part of a training camp, taking advantage of the long break without matches. Carrick’s side return to action on Monday at home to Leeds, but Maguire remains suspended after receiving a red card against Bournemouth on March 20.
