Mohamed Salah missed a chance for Liverpool to pull one back after the soon-to-be-departed winger missed a penalty. But it’s unlikely to make much of a difference, with the result marking the latest low point in a disappointing season for Arn Slott and co.
The Sun claims the players held a summit to exorcise their demons after City’s defeat ahead of Wednesday’s game against Paris Saint-Germain. The six-time European champions will face the current holders in Paris just weeks after the Ligue 1 outfit fell eight behind Chelsea in their last two games.
It’s a daunting task for Liverpool, with some suggesting Slott may not make it to the end of the season if the team suffers a similarly humiliating defeat. Liverpool’s traveling fans could be heard singing as they left the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, where former midfielder Xabi Alonso was rumored to be returning to Anfield.
After his team suffered their 15th defeat of the season, Slott said: “I don’t think you need to ask me about the result, because that says it all. It’s an incredible disappointment. It’s already a disappointment to lose. We lost 4-0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals against a team that Liverpool had played or played many great games against, so of course losing 4-0 is huge.” The 20 minutes we conceded four goals were not up to our standards…
“After losing like this and having a disappointing season, I don’t want to point fingers at individuals. I think it’s about the team. Mo (Salah) had some good chances, but you want to give players like him a chance, so that’s always important. I think putting him and other players in good positions is what we’ve done overall this season.”
“Unfortunately, if you look at the whole season, not just today, the amount of goals we scored relative to the amount of chances we created was far too low, but definitely not up to Liverpool’s standards.”
Liverpool are set to face Fulham at tea time on Saturday after drawing in the Champions League. A second leg on Merseyside will follow, followed by the first derby against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
