Darlington goalkeeper Rory Watson has been rushed to hospital after sustaining a serious head injury during the game against Scarborough. Watson, 30, was treated for a concussion at the stadium before being taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital A&E.
Physiotherapists from both teams were seen treating the shot-stopper, with proceedings significantly delayed due to the injury. Watson was stretchered off the field, but Darlington’s side lost 2-1 to their National League North rivals.
It was later confirmed that Watson was seen by a doctor at the hospital and released later that night. Watson is currently resting at home as he will be forced to miss Monday’s game against South Shields due to concussion regulations.
Darlington were therefore looking for an emergency goalkeeper to replace the York City loanee. “We would like to update everyone on the concussion situation of Rory Watson,” the club said in a statement.
“Rory suffered an accident during the first half of yesterday’s game and was helped from the field and taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital emergency room. After precautionary tests and x-rays, no injuries were detected and Rory was discharged from hospital later that evening.”
“He is now resting at home. We will all be relieved to hear this news and I am sure his supporters will join us in wishing him all the best for his recovery. I would also like to thank Darlington physiotherapist Luke Roberts, Scarborough physiotherapists and all the staff at Darlington Memorial Hospital for their care and support.”
“Due to concussion regulations, Rory will miss at least Monday’s game against South Shields. Following discussions with the league, we are currently considering the option of calling up an emergency goalkeeper. Get well soon, Rory.”
Darlington are currently seventh in the National League North, one point ahead of fellow North East side Spennymoor. Easter Monday’s clash with South Shields could have a huge impact on the promotion race, with Darlington clinching the final play-off spot while their opponents sit second in the table, three points behind leaders Fylde.
