Piers Morgan looked confident as the FA Cup quarter-final draw took place, only to see Arsenal suffer a heavy defeat to Southampton on Saturday night
Southampton couldn’t help but remind Piers Morgan of his reaction in the FA Cup quarter-finals: “It was a great draw for Arsenal”, but ended up seeing them blasted out of the competition in the Championship side.
It’s been an unforgettable two weeks for the Gunners, with four hopes dashed. After losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, their hopes of qualifying for the FA Cup ended with a 2-1 loss to Southampton.
Saints took the lead in the first half with a goal from Ross Stewart. Sia Charles scored the winning goal late on, after Victor Gokeres brought Arsenal back into parity. Despite playing against lower league opponents, the Premier League leaders failed to get the job done as their chance of another trophy passed.
Following the result, Southampton cited Morgan’s social media posts saying he clearly thought Arsenal were worthy enough to move on.
During the contest, the broadcaster was clearly frustrated and made posts that questioned the team’s hopes of winning a silver medal. He wrote: “Do you really want to win trophies with Arsenal? What a poor, lackluster half.”

This came after Morgan himself made some wild statements, starting with claiming that Arsenal have been building up the group over the years. He said: “Who in world football is going to beat us, seriously, seriously, right now in world football? We are the best team, we are the best team assembled in the history of world club football.”
Considering the defeat in the Carabao Cup, he suggested that a further quadruple was still on the cards. That included the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Tottenham’s relegation, but after a shocking defeat at St Mary’s, the FA Cup is now gone.
Mikel Arteta has had several near misses and is under pressure to get over the line. They have taken the lead in the league, holding a nine-point lead over City, who have played more games. They will face Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The Arsenal manager said after the setback: “When you’re winning, like we’ve always done, you have to ‘stop’ and not let winning make you think you’re better than you really are. That’s very clear – we’ve said it many times, we have to be very consistent in every competition we play (in the Premier League) and we will continue to do that.”
