Manchester United have a number of summer targets, with manager Bruno Fernandes urging them to consider Matheus Fernandes as his eventual replacement.
Manchester United are eyeing a long-term successor to Bruno Fernandes, with the captain himself recommending his namesake, West Ham ace Matheus Fernandes.
The 21-year-old has impressed for a struggling Hammers team that could be relegated from the Premier League. Retaining the Portuguese star will be a tall order if the team goes down, and United have him on their shortlist.
Matthäus is not seen as a main target, but United could also sign a number of midfielders this summer. With Casemiro set to leave and Manuel Ugarte also likely to leave Old Trafford, we need to strengthen our options in that area. Elliott Anderson and Sandro Tonali are among their main targets.
The Sun reports that United are considering a move for Matthäus as his stock continues to rise after he was called up for the Portugal squad for the first time in an international match in March.
Bruno has a contract until 2027 and remains the team’s talisman, but the people of Manchester know they can’t rely on the 31-year-old forever. In the summer, there was a lot of uproar over the possibility of him leaving the club, and Saudi Arabia also expressed interest, but the manager chose to stay.

Matthäus moved to the London Stadium in the summer, joining from relegated Southampton for £40 million. He has appeared in 30 games in all competitions, scoring 3 goals, and his performance has attracted attention from many clubs.
United could also face competition from rivals Manchester City, who have their own trump cards. New sporting director Hugo Viana, who originally brought Matthäus to Sporting Lisbon and oversaw his first professional contract, is a fan of theirs. Bernardo Silva is set to leave the club when his contract expires this summer, and City may consider a move themselves.
Last summer, United’s managers looked to bring in players with a proven track record in the Premier League, culminating in the signings of Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo. Matthäus’ transfer will continue that recruitment policy.
Former Southampton midfielder Joe Tesem, who has seen Fernandes up close, previously told the BBC: “He’s becoming the ultimate Premier League midfielder and the club aren’t going to let him go. He plays like a Premier League player. He passes like a Premier League player. He’s quick like a Premier League player. He’s very good in midfield.”
