Ghana sacked their manager after losing four consecutive friendly games, and are now giving themselves the best chance to excel at the World Cup by appointing a high-profile manager.
Manager Joachim Loew has directly refuted reports that Ghana are in talks to appoint a German player. According to reports in Ghana, the 66-year-old is expected to sign a short-term contract.
GbcGhana said negotiations had been intense over the “past 24 hours” but personal terms were close to being finalized. Law is reportedly set to earn a monthly salary of “150,000 euros (approximately £131,000)” under the deal.
However, Lowe later told Germany’s Sky Sports: “No one from Ghana has spoken to me officially.”
Ghana sacked coach Otto Addo last week after the Black Stars lost four games in a row and fell to 74th in the world rankings. “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Otto Addo, head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars, with immediate effect,” the Ghana Football Association said in a statement.
“The association would like to sincerely thank Otto Addo for his contribution to the team and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors. The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction for the Black Stars in due course.”
The Ghana Football Association has not publicly commented on his successor, but reports suggest Lowe is set to take charge in this summer’s competition. The German coach, who coached the German national team from 2006 to 2021, is best known for leading Germany to World Cup glory in 2014 after a third-place finish in South Africa in 2010.

Lowe has been away from coaching since 2021, but admitted he had received “multiple offers” to return to coaching in recent years.
Speaking to Kicker last year, he said: “I wasn’t really interested in coming back. But now I’m ready to consider opportunities to make a good impression. I have a lot of experience with the national team and I’m preparing for major tournaments.”
He also admitted that he should have left his job in Germany three years earlier. “I should have stepped down after the 2018 World Cup to make way for someone with fresh ideas who could manage the transition from the ‘golden’ generation,” he said.
Ghana will be in Group L, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama. The opening game will be against Panama on June 18th, followed by a match against Thomas Tuchel’s side on June 23rd.
