Arsenal defender Ben White returned to England as a substitute after being booed on the field by fans in the draw with Uruguay, but is expected to start against Japan.
Ben White was allowed to start against Japan despite being booed by England fans.
Arsenal defender White made his first appearance for England in three-and-a-half years against Uruguay after withdrawing from the 2022 World Cup. White was booed and awarded a penalty after scoring on Friday night, but manager Thomas Tuchel insisted he had not reacted badly in training and had spoken to his team-mates about the whole situation.
England boss Tuchel said: “He has our support and I think he feels the support of us and the support of the group. I understand it’s happened to other players already and I hope we get that out of our system and if he plays tomorrow he has a chance because it makes sense to play with a lot of players who have fresh legs and didn’t start in the first game.”
“He is one of them. And if he has a good training session, he will be in the squad. I am not attending all the meetings and discussions that take place without a coach, I was attending a lot of meetings, watching Japan and so on.”
“So I’m not completely aware, but I think so. That’s my guess. He was great, he was good in training again, he was good in the group.”
Tuchel’s future concerns
Tuchel admitted he was concerned about the forward’s performance.
England captain Harry Kane is having another hot season in goal, but Tuchel expressed concerns about the numbers of other forwards such as Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Ebereshi Eze.
Three Lions boss Tuchel said: “I understand that. I love the players. I really like the quality of our players, especially the attacking players, but the sheer numbers of our players, apart from Harry, on the wings and everywhere, are not the outstanding numbers that we would normally expect.”
“So what’s the reason? According to the league, is it that the defenders are too strong and difficult to score and assist?”
“I want them to put up more numbers, so Bukayo, Noni, Ebbs, Anthony Gordon, even Cole Palmer, even Morgan Rodgers. Phil Foden, not Jude. Like Harry, who’s producing these outstanding numbers? Who’s deciding the games? It’s just a fact and it tells us what we have to do as a team.”

Tuchel is wary of elites
Tuchel has admitted that England are not among the “strong favorites” for the World Cup due to their record against top opponents.
The only teams in the top two that England have not beaten under Tuchel are Senegal and Uruguay, so the England manager is yet to beat a team in the top 20. Japan are 19th in the FIFA rankings, while Croatia, England’s first World Cup opponent, are 11th.
“I wasn’t consciously aware of it, but it’s affecting my narrative that we won’t be coming to America as favorites. That’s the way it is. But we’ll be coming as cup contenders and we have the right to believe and dream and we want to make that possible,” Tuchel said.
“I didn’t realize it. In tournaments it can be a big factor that it’s very tiring to be involved in league and cup competitions. Maybe that’s one of the reasons in tournaments and we’ll face it. It’s just the reality.”
