Tottenham are in talks with manager Roberto de Zerbi and there is a real possibility that they are one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining.
Chris Waddle fears the hiring of Roberto De Zerbi will not stop Tottenham from relegation to the Premier League. Spurs are in advanced talks with the former Marseille and Brighton manager after parting ways with manager Igor Tudor, but Waddle believes the horse has already bolted.
Tudor was at the helm of the crisis-hit club for just 44 days, and after failing to win a league game, he resigned by mutual consent. Tottenham are in 17th place in the Premier League, one point off the relegation zone, and time is of the essence.
CEO Vinay Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange turned to De Zerbi to steady the ship. The Italian was sacked by Marseille in February and is embracing the challenge of rebuilding a team that is without a win in 13 league games until 2025.
During his time in charge, Tudor only picked up a point from a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, with his only win coming against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, which was not enough to overturn a first-leg deficit. Former Spurs winger Waddle fears De Zerbi could face a losing battle.

“I don’t think a new manager at Tottenham will change anything. The players are not good enough and a new manager won’t change that,” Waddle told 10bet. “I’m watching the team and I’m looking at players who don’t seem to have the stomach or the ability to pull the club out of a hole.
“I’ve had a great few years at Tottenham and have a lot of love for the club. I have a lot of respect for the fans and feel for them. It’s sad to see what has happened to the club this season.”
“Look at Tottenham’s managers in recent years: Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho. They are proven winners. Has anything changed? It’s not about the manager, it’s about changing the culture at the top of the club.”
“Tottenham have the best stadium in the country and the best training facilities. They don’t have the best players and unless the board changes their recruitment policy the club will always struggle. They will never be able to challenge for the top of the table.”
Waddle added: “Don’t blame the manager for Tottenham’s problems. It’s not Igor Tudor’s fault. The people who run the club have to take responsibility.”
“Tottenham are fighting. They have seven games left to save their season. Only the players can save them now. The players need to roll up their sleeves. Win individual battles. It’s about getting back to basics.”
“Are we confident that they can do it? There’s nothing in this group of players that gives us confidence that Tottenham will be playing in the Premier League next season.”
