Frank Lampard’s Coventry City are on the verge of promotion to the Premier League and the Sky Blues manager could use his connections at Chelsea to bring in reinforcements in a bid to survive.
The atmosphere in Coventry City is electric, with the Sky Blues teetering on the brink of a fairy-tale return to the Premier League. Since joining midway through last season, Frank Lampard has revitalized the team, which had been away from the top flight since 2001 and had been playing in the fourth tier in 2018.
That said, Lampard and his team will understand that while reaching the Premier League is the easy part, staying there is a much tougher task, and one that will require meaningful reinforcements. Lampard’s arrival came with the assumption from the outset that he would be able to use his strong ties with Chelsea to bridge the quality gap, as he did during his time at Derby, and the coming transfer window will be a true test of how effective those ties are.
It’s clear where Coventry need to strengthen. Their often-rotated central defensive duo could be exposed by the speed of Premier League attackers, while the midfield clearly lacks a dynamic edge following Ben Sheef’s sending off.
Haji Wright is the only forward with a proven track record in Europe’s top leagues, so there are also concerns about the flexibility of the attack and the depth of the team. With that in mind, here are five Chelsea players Lampard could sign this summer, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Philipp Jorgensen (goalkeeper)
Filip Jorgensen’s future looks uncertain as the highly-rated Mike Penders is set to return to Chelsea this summer after impressing on loan at Strasbourg. The Danish keeper has been the Blues’ second-choice player since arriving from Villarreal in 2024, and Penders’ return could push him further down the pecking order.
Karl Rushworth has been a solid performer in goal for Coventry this season, but is expected to return to Brighton once his loan ends. In that case, Lampard would need to switch between the sticks. Jorgensen has faced criticism, but his core qualities remain clear, especially after his performance against PSG earlier this month. His reflexes and composure on the ball are particularly suited to a high-level system like Lampard’s, which emphasizes playing from the back.
Chelsea are unlikely to grant a cut-price deal given they have invested £20m in him. A loan move to Coventry therefore feels like the most likely scenario, offering him consistent first-team action, something he has been largely denied over the past two years.
Josh Achiampong (defender)
Some Chelsea supporters may be reluctant to see Josh Achiampong leave, but the young defender clearly needs regular playing time and a loan to Coventry could provide that. Opportunities at Stamford Bridge may be limited in the short term, with Levi Colwill nearing full fitness, Mamadou Sarr recently joined from Strasbourg in an existing relationship with Liam Rosenior, and further defensive signings reportedly being considered.
However, Lampard has a track record of developing young players. During his time at Chelsea, he gave first-team debuts to the likes of Reece James, Mason Mount, Mark Guehi, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Billy Gilmour and Ian Maassen. Coventry could offer Acheampong a similar environment to develop under a manager who is willing to believe in young players.
Capable of playing at both centre-back and right-back, Achiampong has speed, strength and technical ability, qualities that will strengthen the newly-promoted side as they seek stability at the back. Chelsea may be reluctant to allow a move, but given Achiampong’s lack of playing time in west London, a temporary move could be the wisest option.
Dario Essgo (midfielder)
After an injury-induced debut in London, Dario Essugo is currently facing a key stage in his development, where consistent playing time is essential to regain form and confidence.
Chelsea still consider him a key back-up to Moises Caicedo, but there are concerns that limited appearances after almost a year without football could hinder his long-term progress. Therefore, the financing move could benefit all parties involved.
Lampard’s midfield has often attracted criticism for being overly technical, “soft” in transition moments and lacking true ball-winners. Essugo provides the physical presence and defensive bite needed to protect the backline while freeing up more creative players.
Tyrik George (winger)
Tyrik George made a notable impact off the bench last season, contributing important goals, including the goal against Fulham that rekindled Chelsea’s bid for a top-four place. However, the 20-year-old has struggled to get minutes since joining Everton on loan in January.
Under manager David Moyes, he has made just one start and played just four minutes since mid-February. Although his stint on Merseyside proved disappointing, his transfer value could be lower than it was a year ago, potentially opening up opportunities elsewhere.
Coventry’s current wide players lack the explosive one-on-one ability and technical creativity that George naturally brings. Signing him permanently would allow Lampard to build a long-term attack plan around a player who can produce decisive moments.
Marc Giu (striker)
After a short loan move to Sunderland at the start of the season, Mark Giu has returned to Chelsea to cover for Liam Delap’s injury. However, since Delap regained fitness, Giu has struggled to compete.
The former Barcelona prospect is only 20 years old but already has a strong physical presence, making him suitable for a developmental loan in the Premier League. Lampard’s tactical set-up relies on forwards who can lead the attack and link play effectively. This is a quality Giu cultivated at La Masia.
He would also bring a different option to the likes of Wright and Ellis Sims, offering sharp movement in tight areas, relentless pressing and a natural instinct to score inside the box.
A full season loan is likely to suit all parties, with Chelsea keen for the Spaniard to gain experience on a regular basis and there are few coaches more suited than the Premier League’s highest scoring midfielder.
