Phil Foden seals World Cup place in last-chance saloon as Cole Palmer threatens to loom

Of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad with just one game remaining before departure, it is likely that either Phil Foden or Cole Palmer will be playing in the World Cup.

Phil Foden is two games shy of reaching 50 caps for England. Still, the big star appears to be in serious danger of being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad this summer.

A lack of plane tickets is raising the possibility of a direct shootout between Cole Palmer and Foden, who have joined the 26-man team.

Tuchel will certainly have a difficult decision to make, given that Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rodgers have been touted as No. 10.

Obviously, some of the credit will be given to him due to injury, fatigue and decline in form as we head into the conclusion of the Premier League season and Champions League.

Bukayo Saka’s poor form this season is cause for concern. Arsenal’s wingers are England’s mainstay. His consistency and accomplishments are second to none.

Declan Rice was reported on Friday but had returned to the club by Saturday night amid Arsenal’s horrendous schedule.

Ollie Watkins is not even in the 35-man squad, Harry Kane’s substitute is not yet fixed and Aston Villa’s striker is sweating in his place, while Dom Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have not yet achieved enough to cement a spot and have therefore failed to slot into a forward position.

Tuchel also confirmed that John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi and Trevó Chalobá are ahead of Harry Maguire in the centre-halves. Difficult decisions are being made all around the pitch and big names are at risk.

However, with the split team comings and goings, it is quite notable that both Foden and Palmer will feature in both friendlies.

Foden started against Uruguay, but once again his performance was unsatisfactory, and he ended the game abruptly after being overwhelmed by a terrible attack.

Palmer came on and probably did more in 34 minutes than Foden had done in the previous 56 minutes.

And there is a sense of unfulfilled promise when it comes to Foden, as the Manchester City forward is an extremely talented footballer.

England fans serenaded Foden at Euro 2024 with the song “You can’t start a fire, you can’t start a fire without a spark, Phil Foden is on fire, he’ll be out on the park playing against the Germans”.

Foden had an outstanding season, finishing the 2023/24 season with 27 goals in all competitions, being named player of the year in the top flight and entering the Euros full of hope, so he was named Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year.

But it was Palmer who really stole the show. He was England’s super-sub and came off the bench to score in the final, which England ultimately lost 2-1 to Spain.

Tuchel has made it clear that Foden can play as a false nine. That might give him an advantage. Palmer and Bellingham could do the same. But Foden is probably the more natural fit, with Bellingham definitely in pole position at number 10.

Tuchel is not afraid to wear the number 10 alongside Rodgers, but once Bellingham is fully fit he will be the obvious choice.

And why compromise your best player? That’s Foden’s point. He has yet to perform well enough to secure a place in an England shirt.

Saka seems to be the favorite on the right. It will be between Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford on the left. Rodgers and Bellingham will play the number 10 role.

And indeed, even a 26-person team can only take one more person. That’s why Tuesday’s game against Japan is so important. That’s why Tuchel wanted to see Foden and Palmer throughout the week-long camp.

Tuchel was asked last week if it would be difficult to tell his players they would be returning home after the match against Uruguay, saying it was because they felt their chances of making it to the World Cup had diminished.

Coach Tuchel rejected the idea. “When I was an Under-15 and Under-14 coach, I would tell 15-year-olds they couldn’t stay at academy level. It was really tough because they’d start crying after five seconds and feel like their life’s dreams were crushed by their coach,” he said.

Please make no mistake. Foden and Palmer have already achieved many of their dreams. They were never rejected by the academy.

But missing out on the World Cup would be devastating for either of them, even if other big names miss out on the summer.

And you can be sure that other big stars won’t be on the plane. That’s why Tuesday’s final friendly, the last audition before Tuchel names his summer squad, is so important.
