Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton has taken the unusual step of releasing a video interview in response to outrage over the club’s decision to welcome Nigel Farage to Portman Road. Reform UK leaders visited the Championship club’s home on Monday, sparking a backlash from supporters.

Mr Farage was in Ipswich ahead of a political rally to launch the party’s local election campaign. He booked a stadium tour and used the visit as a photo opportunity, sharing a photo of himself in the dressing room wearing a ‘Farage 10’ shirt.

Ipswich, who came under fire from fans for allowing a controversial right-wing MP to visit, issued a statement saying the club is “apolitical and does not endorse or endorse any individual or political party”. But questions remain about how Mr Farage made his visit and how he handled the situation in the aftermath.

So Ashton appeared in front of the cameras on the club’s own channel, looking flustered. He said there was a “misunderstanding” about Mr Farage’s visit, but did not explain what it was.

“I know this has been a very difficult week for all of us,” he said. “It’s hurting our staff, it’s hurting our fan base, it’s hurting our local community. I’m very upset about that. That’s why I unreservedly apologize and say I’m sorry.”

Asked if he understood the anger, Ashton added: “Yes, I understand that my supporters and people in the community are angry. I also understand that there are a lot of misconceptions about what actually happened this week.”

“We also understand that we have lessons to learn, as mistakes have been made that have caused harm and distress to some in the local community. And as president of the club, I take full responsibility for those mistakes and take full responsibility for ensuring that those lessons are learned and learned quickly.”

“The entire board is currently considering our policy on how we engage with local politicians and political parties.”

Ipswich’s original club statement read: “Following Monday’s visit by the Reform Party and its leader, Mr Nigel Farage, the club would like to issue the following statement: Ipswich Town Football Club has hosted representatives from a variety of political parties over the years.”

“The club remains apolitical and does not endorse or endorse any individual or political party. As part of its role within the community, the club will continue to engage with representatives across the political spectrum.”

“Ipswich Town is proud to be an inclusive, diverse and welcoming organization that supports all members of the local and wider community and this commitment will continue.”
