Liverpool star Mohamed Salah revealed on Tuesday night that he will leave Anfield at the end of the season, just 12 months after signing a new contract with the club.
All good things come to an end. And looking back at Mohamed Salah’s impressive Premier League career, the Egyptian superstar and Liverpool had a very good relationship.
In a few weeks’ time, the 33-year-old will begin to shine in his glory after an incredible nine years on Merseyside. Salah is third on the club’s all-time top scorers list and will leave Anfield as the player with the most goal contributions (281) in Premier League history.
Salah has epitomized consistency throughout his time at Liverpool, but his departure probably won’t come as a complete shock as 2025-26 has been a difficult season for the Reds talisman.
After all, there have been signs in recent months that Salah and Liverpool may be parting ways, most notably in December when the attackers nuked an interview in an explosives zone. Here’s the story of Salah’s departure and how it unfolded…

September to November 24: Exit tips
Remember, Salah only signed a new two-year contract around 12 months ago. But before he even started putting pen to paper, there were plenty of teases that he could be on the move.
“No matter what happens, I will never forget the feeling of scoring at Anfield,” Salah posted on social media as he entered the final months of his contract. A few months ago, following the defeat to Manchester United, Salah insisted it was his “last year” at the club.
These cryptic comments coincided with strong interest from Saudi clubs, amid growing concerns over Salah’s future…
April 25th: New deal
Despite the teasing and transfer speculation, a new deal has actually been finalized. Last April, Salah and Liverpool agreed new terms and the former AS Roma and Chelsea player put pen to paper.
He won the Premier League just a few weeks later after a great individual campaign. Everything was fine. Very, very good.
November 25: High-profile dismissals.
After a difficult start to the season, manager Arne Slott decided to leave Salah out of the squad against West Ham. The Dutchman said it was “not a good thing” to leave out his star man, and the decision raised quite a few eyebrows…
December 25th: Mixed Zone bombshell
Salah reacted to being dropped by dropping an absolute bomb in the mixed zone just a few weeks later. He slotted in, claiming he had “nothing to do with” the Liverpool manager and felt he had been “thrown under the bus”.
This felt like the point of no return for the forward. Before leaving for the African Cup of Nations, Salah said he had told his family to head to Anfield for his final game, hinting he would leave in January.
Did he even hint at his next destination? “Is there any interest from Saudi Arabia? I don’t want to answer that question because the club will take me in a different direction. I have done a lot for this club. I love the fans very much and I love the club. I don’t know what will happen next,” he said.
December 25: Peace negotiations
Salah did not travel to Rome for the Champions League match with the Liverpool squad after the abuse. However, after peace negotiations at the club’s training ground, he was selected as Slott’s manager.
Immediate positive development. Heading into AFCON, however, his long-term future was still up in the air.
January 26: Saudi transfer twist
Salah’s comments were a near-perfect catalyst to spark further interest, as he had been linked with clubs in the Saudi Professional League in successive transfer windows.
But it turns out clubs have cooled their pursuit of the forward, at least for now. There were no mid-season transfers, and with Salah returning to the Liverpool team, things seemed to be turning a corner.
However, even though the noise had died down off the pitch, criticism of his performance on the pitch continued. Salah has scored just one goal in the Premier League since November and there are growing calls for him to be removed from the starting lineup again.
Although Slott has resisted stirring up any further trouble, and players and coaches have been on a united front, there was little sign that an announcement was imminent.
March 26 – Salah’s resignation statement
And on Tuesday night, Salah admitted this would be his final season as a Liverpool player in an emotional video shared on social media.
One of Liverpool’s all-time great players will end his glittering career at Anfield in the coming weeks. And we should all be honored to witness it.
