Mo Salah talks about his all-time Premier League rankings before leaving Liverpool

The big debate: Liverpool and the Premier League face the potential future of Mohamed Salah as they prepare to say goodbye to one of the greatest players of our time.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah celebrates with the Premier League trophy after Liverpool were named 2024/25 Premier League champions after the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Crystal Palace FC at Anfield in Liverpool, England on May 25, 2025.

Well, the news is out. Liverpool’s talisman, record-breaker and Egyptian all-conquering kingpin Mohamed Salah will officially leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The attacker announced the news in an emotional video on Tuesday night, shocking the football world. Yes, there are whispers about Salah’s future. And his explosive Mixed Zone interview in December certainly felt like a point of no return.

As speculation becomes reality, there is already talk of where Salah will go next and how the Premier League champions will replace him. The Premier League would undoubtedly be even poorer without Salah, but where does he rank among the best players of all time?

We asked the Mirror Football Team for their opinion.

The Premier League Hall of Fame has airbrushed him out of the competition’s history, but Ryan Giggs’ achievements may mean Mo Salah isn’t even the best left-footer to have graced English club football.

But, rightly or wrongly, we won’t mention Giggs’ name. That means the likes of Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne and Wayne Rooney are players alongside him.

Was Salah as powerful and elegant as Henry? No. Was he as creative as De Bruyne? No. Was he for a while as much of a talismanic figure as Ronaldo? Probably not. Was he as effective as Rooney in an all-round sense? i doubt it.

But in terms of long-term importance to an elite club, he was as valuable as any. But from a ranking perspective, let’s rank them from a viewability perspective. Who would you like to pay the most to see?

And for me, in the short history of the Premier League, Salah ranks only below Henry and De Bruyne.

Mo Salah ranks somewhere among the 10 greatest players in Premier League history. But beyond that, I disagree. The Liverpool legend represents the Premier League’s transition from wide midfielder to inside forward, and it’s hard to compare him to stars of the past. Is he more like David Beckham or Thierry Henry? I’d argue the latter, so I’ll compare him to a forward who boasts stats comparable to Salah. Today, perhaps with recency bias in mind, I choose the attacking trio of Salah, Wayne Rooney and Henry in my Premier League XI to date. But there are at least five players, including Rooney and Henry, who I think leave a bigger legacy. That’s why, despite his incredible longevity, I don’t think Salah is in the running for the best player in Premier League history.

In terms of the Premier League’s all-time greats, Mo Salah should be right up there at the top.

Perhaps he wasn’t as graceful as Thierry Henry, or as pure as someone like Kevin De Bruyne in terms of his overall play, but in terms of sheer bloody-minded, single-minded ruthlessness and ability to get things done over and over again, few can match Liverpool’s King of Egypt.

At times his touch was a bit lacking, his selfish tendencies were infuriating at times, and perhaps he didn’t have all the flicks and tricks of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, but he more than made up for it by putting in great performances week in and week out during his best nine years at Anfield, scoring goals, assisting others and leading an arguably better Liverpool side to an astonishing level of consistency.

Salah was at the forefront of the Reds’ head-to-head showdown with Manchester City, with both teams reaching new heights in terms of total points and incredible efficiency, while his goals helped bring the club back to the forefront of European football’s top table. It was hard not to notice the overflowing trophy cabinet behind Salah as he bid farewell on Tuesday night, with both team and individual trophies officially awarded.

These trophies help to highlight the incredible legacy of a true Premier League great and, let’s be honest, a player few could match in terms of what he won and the impact he had.

The players who are truly memorable feel the inevitability. If the ball finds them in the area, the result is a foregone conclusion.

It could be Salah picking up the ball and running towards a retreating defender, Henry cutting in from the left or Wayne Rooney driving towards United’s opponent’s goal.

But in Alan Shearer’s case, it was almost inevitable. Sure, he didn’t have the pace of Salah or the smarts of De Bruyne, but when he had a chance, even half a chance, he took it. His record of 260 goals in 411 Premier League games is almost unbelievable. This was especially true for a team that wasn’t always chasing titles.

For the purpose of this discussion, we will only focus on the attacking players. This is because it gets a little more complicated when compared to defensive players. And Salah is very stable in the Premier League’s pantheon of great forwards.

But for me, Shearer comes out on top, even if Salah’s goals-per-game rate doesn’t come close to the league’s record scorers.

For years, he was inescapable. It would therefore be a criminal offense to bring a case against Salah, who deserves his place as one of the best players in Premier League history.

I always find it difficult to effectively and fairly compare players and teams from different eras. Would Thierry Henry or Ryan Giggs have had the same success had they played in this day and age, or would Salah have torn things up in the Premiership era? There are many factors that are difficult to quantify.

One thing that cannot be debated about Salah is his consistency. This season anyway, his returns in front of goal have been absolutely ridiculous. And the fact that he holds the record for most goals scored (281 goals) in the Premier League era speaks volumes.

Is he better than Henry, Giggs, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney? Probably not. However, over time, people’s views may change. After all, he has been consistently brilliant over such a long period of time that Salah will be at the forefront of the conversation when people look back on this era of Premier League football.
