Scott McTominay remains Napoli’s main man and the former Manchester United ace has been likened to ‘Jesus’ by Diego Maradona’s son after continuing his brilliance
Scott McTominay has been dubbed ‘Jesus’ by Diego Maradona’s son, who believes the Scottish midfielder is Napoli’s second-greatest player.
The former Manchester United star has been a revelation in Italy since moving there for just over £25 million. He already enjoys hero status among the Napoli faithful after leading them to the Serie A title last season.
It was Maradona’s second Scudetto since 1990, when he almost single-handedly led his team to glory. In the process, McTominay was named Italy’s best player and was nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
McTominay has continued his impressive form this season, despite Napoli facing the difficult task of retaining their Serie A crown. He scored 11 goals and provided four assists for Antonio Conte’s side, with Diego Armando Maradona Junior highlighting the Scot’s achievements with his latest goal in Napoli’s 1-0 win over Cagliari on Friday.
“McTominay is the most decisive player in Napoli’s history after his father. Napoli had a god called Diego, but for me McTominay is Jesus. He is a completely fundamental player.”

Maradona is hailed as Napoli’s greatest player ever. The Argentine spent eight years with the club from 1984, helping them win two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, one UEFA Cup and the Italian Super Cup. Due to his heroic status, a stadium was named after him after his death.
McTominay was struggling to become a mainstay in Manchester, where he had lived since he was a boy. Napoli were able to unearth his goal-scoring exploits, which had gone unnoticed during his time at Old Trafford, and they now have a player who will develop even further after the Scottish player leaves the club.
He previously spoke about his decision: “I looked at the crazy fans, I looked at the coaches, I looked at the players, and I saw an opportunity. I made the decision. I didn’t look back. It didn’t take me long to make the decision. I knew it was what I wanted and I’ll never regret it in my life. Once I set my mind on what I want to do, that’s it. Nothing can hold me back.”
Conte’s decision to bring the Scot to Italy proved to be an inspired one, with him always seeing the potential to become a top performer. “Over the last year and a half,[McTominay]has become a complete player,” he said in January. “When I was in England and played against him as an opponent, I always saw his quality and it was always part of his quality, especially attacking inside the box and scoring goals.”
