Chelsea legend Frank Lampard’s stock has hit an all-time high as his Coventry City side move closer to promotion – and now he looks set to make a spectacular comeback at Stamford Bridge.
Nicky Butt believes Chelsea should consider luring Frank Lampard back to Stamford Bridge in the summer as pressure continues to mount on current Blues head coach Liam Rosenior.
Lampard, a Chelsea legend and the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, was in charge for 18 months between 2019 and 2021. Lampard, 47, will return to the Blues at Coventry City in 2023, restoring his reputation after a damaging spell as caretaker manager. They have a nine-point lead at the top of the Championship and are on course for promotion to the Premier League.
While Lampard is enjoying life in the second tier, Chelsea are in the midst of a slump under Rosenior, who was appointed on a six-year contract in January.
The highly-rated 41-year-old has just endured his toughest week as manager. The team lost 8-2 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and then lost 3-0 away to Everton at the weekend.

And as interest in Rosenior continues to grow, Butt suggested Chelsea should consider giving Lampard another call, suggesting the former England midfielder would be well placed to succeed if given the job again. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt said: “If Frank Lampard gets promoted at Coventry, do you think they can go back to Frank?”
“For the first time I think he took the job too early and there was a transfer ban so we had to use a lot of young players.
“It wouldn’t be foolish to bring Frank Lampard back as Chelsea manager for me. He did a great job at Coventry.
“He’s a bit more experienced now and probably made a few mistakes in the first game. People need to understand that the transfer ban means they have to rely on a lot of young players and that must have been difficult for him.”
“He would be a completely different manager now. Lampard would find it easier to work with better players and it would be easier to get his message across to more technical players.”
“I think Frank will do a great job when he returns to Chelsea with his experience, I really do.”
