Starmer proves he can get one thing right as England throw away their ‘woke’ flag | Soccer | Sports

Nature is healing. England have ditched the ‘woke’ St George’s cross that had stuck like a blood-sucking tick to the back of their previous kits. The 2026 World Cup strip has arrived. What will happen? After all, Nike has finally decided that patriotism in national clothes is not such a regressive sin.

The cut purple and blue St. George flag was thrown into the incinerator where it belonged. Instead? The words “happy and wonderful.” It’s a return to tradition and feels super refreshing, like a cold cuppa after three weeks of forced kale smoothies. Let’s be honest: Nike’s attempt in 2024 (those are their real words) to “unite and inspire” by tinkering with the national emblem was about as unifying as a loud fart in a crowded elevator. Like Tottenham winning a football match, it was a despicable and despicable act of virtue from a brand that clearly hates the British flag.

They thought they could “reimagine” our national identity to appease the chattering classes, the type who think the St. George Cross is a dog whistle for the “far right” and that patriotism is as problematic as Robert Sanchez on a Saturday afternoon.

It’s pure, unadulterated brain rot logic. Claiming the flag is “controversial” because some assholes are waving it is like saying the Manchester United badge is a symbol of mediocrity because it’s been shitty for a few years.

In those days, if you dared to complain, you were immediately branded a gammon or a bigot. Apparently, if you want your flag to actually look like your own, you end up turning it into a prehistoric relic. It was a classic piece of big-city hypocrisy. “It’s all about inclusivity, folks…but when it comes to joint-dragging patriots, you can sit back and shut up!”

But the most shocking part of this whole story isn’t that England has finally hit the “pause” button on showing virtue, kneeling BLM, and flag-destroying punts. It’s that Sir Keir Starmer, a man who changes his principles more often than Ben White changes his tanning bulb, was actually able to make the right decisions.

For the first time, the man who usually spends his time shuffling between positions like Pep Guardiola’s full-back, has taken a firm stand on something that actually matters to ordinary people, not just the insane backbenchers with terrorist sympathies.

“This flag is for everyone to use, it’s for everyone to unite with, it doesn’t need to change,” Starmer said in a show of unprecedented common sense after the kit was launched. “We need to be proud of it. So they should reconsider this and bring it back. I’m not even sure they can adequately explain why they thought it needed to be changed in the first place.”

Don’t get me wrong, Starmer is still a human flip-flopper. But give credit where credit is due. He realized that his inner Englishman was buried deep beneath layers of wishy-washy bureaucratic sludge.

It’s a biblical miracle. It suggests that deep down there may be tiny slivers of decency, sound judgment, and unashamed moral courage.

If someone as hopelessly beige as Keir Starmer can tell you that you don’t mess with St George’s crosses, then you realize how ridiculously drunk Nike, the Football Association and everyone else who applauded this nonsense have become in their performative sacrament.

The return to traditional uniforms emblazoned with the lyrics of the national anthem is a victory for fans who refuse to be told their patriotism is at fault. This is a reminder that England shirts belong to us, not to some turtleneck-wearing marketing consultant who thinks ‘tradition’ means something you buy in an artisan bakery.

We go to the World Cup with a red and white flag and the message “Happy and Shining.” For the first time in a while, it feels like there are adults back in the room – even if one of them is Keir Starmer.
