Manchester United are in contract talks with England stars Kobie Mainoo and Harry Maguire ahead of the crucial summer transfer window when a full-time manager will be appointed.
Manchester United appear close to agreeing new contracts with England stars Cobie Mainoo and Harry Maguire. Both have been key players since manager Michael Carrick took over in January, and the club are looking to tie them to new deals.
Mainoo and Maguire benefited greatly from Carrick’s appointment as caretaker manager after being sidelined under Ruben Amorim. Mainu had pushed for a move to Napoli in the January transfer window, but Maguire faced an uncertain future as his contract expired and other centre-backs were prioritized.
The England duo have started all nine of Carrick’s games to date, changing outlooks and earning him a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad for the friendly against Uruguay and Japan. And United have decided to sort out their future before the summer transfer window opens.
The Athletic reports that United are close to agreeing new terms with both players. Mainu is currently under contract until June 2027, but he is one of the lowest-paid players at the club and is expected to receive significant reinforcements after his solid performances under Carrick. The 20-year-old academy graduate is set to sign a contract until 2031 on a significantly improved salary.

Meanwhile, Maguire is poised to sign a new one-year extension with an option for a further 12 months. The 33-year-old’s current contract is due to expire on June 30, and it was previously thought he was likely to be released alongside veteran midfielder Casemiro.
United have won seven of their nine games under Carrick, with Maynou and Maguire at the heart of the team. They are third in the Premier League ahead of Friday night’s game against Bournemouth and look set to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The club announced in the summer that they would appoint Amorim’s permanent successor, and Carrick has strengthened his position with every win. The fact that United have now awarded contracts to two players who had been frozen out by Amorim perhaps suggests the sentiments of the leaders towards handing the role to Carrick.
United are preparing for a busy summer in the transfer market. Casemiro’s departure at the end of his £350,000-a-week contract means they need to sign at least one top-quality midfielder, while Manuel Ugarte’s future is also in doubt.
They are considering Newcastle’s pair of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães, who could be tempted to jump to remain in the Champions League, as well as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleva and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
United spent more than £200m last summer on the signings of Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesco, Brian Mbeumo and Senne Lamence, but it is understood that signing Anderson, who is also being courted by Manchester City, would cost around £80m.
