Manchester United are close to agreeing new contracts with Kobie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, according to reports. Mainu was frozen out of the squad under manager Ruben Amorim, but has emerged as a key cog in United’s midfield machine under manager Michael Carrick. The Portuguese manager did not make a single Premier League start in the 2025/26 season until he was sacked in January.
Since then, Mainu has been a constant presence under Carrick and is currently under contract until the summer of 2027, with the club having an option to extend for a further year. But it looks like the 20-year-old will be rewarded for his impressive results with a brand new contract. According to The Athletic, United are inching closer to signing a new contract with him until 2031.
The report claims Mr Mainoo was offered a “significant improvement in salary” as part of his terms. Although there is still work to be done, it is believed that negotiations are progressing towards a conclusion in the near future.
It comes just months after the midfielder fell out of favor during Amorim’s tenure as head coach and was forced to leave United.
His return to the spotlight under Carrick led to a call-up to the England squad, with Thomas Tuchel naming him in the squad to face Uruguay and Japan during the next international break.
Mainu now hopes to qualify for this summer’s World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Maguire’s contract runs until the end of this season, but he is expected to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
It is claimed that a new one-year contract with an option for a further 12-month extension is “in the final stages”.
Both players started all nine of United’s games since Carrick took over on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Their performance gave the Red Devils a record of seven wins and one draw, leaving them with a strong chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
They currently sit third in the Premier League and could move within four points of second-placed Manchester City if they beat Bournemouth on Friday night.
