Newcastle suffered humiliation at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League and questions are being asked of manager Eddie Howe amid a mediocre Premier League season.
Eddie Howe once broke through the glass ceiling as Newcastle United manager. But on Tyneside it feels like the sky is no longer the limit for him.
Winning the domestic cup for a club that had never been associated with silverware earned Howe a lot of respect. So is earning Newcastle a place at the top table in the Champions League.
But people like Howe know that business owners like him only get a small amount of credit in banks. And it can be spent quickly.
Stepping out of one’s comfort zone on a journey into the unknown can reveal one’s limitations. Just like Barcelona did this week at Camp Nou.
Newcastle and Howe were shown to be out of force. Leave them humiliated and humbled and go to the mother of all autopsies.

But the main question Newcastle’s Saudi owners should ask themselves is whether Howe is still the manager to take the club to the next level.
Will Newcastle challenge for the Premier League title and be competitive in the later stages of Europe?
Newcastle will probably not play in the Champions League next season either.
Howe’s camp is treading water in the center of the table. This seems about right for a manager who has flirted with people at an elite level but has proven to be lacking in ability.
Perhaps Howe’s ambitions will match those of his club. However, his management skills will not make that dream come true.
Howe was thought to be the next England manager after Thomas Tuchel. However, this will not happen immediately and Tuchel has now signed a new contract with the FA.
Now, the season is coming to an end and while nothing seems to be more important than this weekend’s Tyne/Wear derby, Newcastle’s managers have a big decision to make.
Whether to stay with Howe and hope he can prove himself at a higher level. Or twist it around and find another manager who can do it.
Newcastle remains one of the richest clubs in world football. But what’s the point in lavishing some of this wealth on managers who have proven to be capable but can’t match the best?
Howe may not be as good a coach as he thinks he is. This is a common problem in games.
And the sooner Newcastle’s owners realize this, the sooner the club can start making serious efforts to challenge for the game’s biggest trophy.
