Manchester United are planning to sign at least one midfielder in the summer transfer window, with Bruno Guimarães the latest signing among a group of Premier League stars.
Manchester United are reportedly in talks to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães for £69 million. However, the Red Devils will face competition from Real Madrid, who have reignited long-standing interest.
United have confirmed Casemiro will leave when his contract expires in June and plan to sign at least one midfielder this summer. Casemiro is said to have personally recommended Guimarães, a fellow Brazilian, as his successor.
Reuters added that initial contacts indicated talks would proceed smoothly, but Madrid are now in the race. The La Liga champions want to sign Guimarães in 2022 after missing out on him.
Newcastle beat the likes of Madrid and Arsenal to agree a deal worth up to £40m with Lyon. The 28-year-old has since become a mainstay for Eddie Howe’s side, and his absence was felt during Wednesday’s humiliating 7-2 Champions League defeat to Barcelona.

United have also been linked with Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali, but a double is unlikely. The Red Devils’ shortlist also includes Tyler Adams, Elliott Anderson, Carlos Bareva, Joao Gomez and Adam Wharton, all of whom have proven themselves in the Premier League.
With Casemiro’s £18.2m salary taken off the books, United stand to reap the financial and sporting benefits of Champions League qualification under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. Guimarães’ contract at St James’s Park runs until 2028 and Newcastle are in no hurry to sell him.
But the Magpies are desperate to get him back on the pitch. Guimarães returned to training on Monday before heading to Barcelona to support his teammates.

“I hope he doesn’t go too far,” Howe added. “Once he comes back to us, we will have to evaluate him.
“I know he’s working incredibly hard on his rehabilitation with the physiotherapists and doctors and I think he’ll be in good shape. Yes, he’s a very big player. Hopefully by the end of the international break we’ll be active and available.”
Newcastle host local rivals Sunderland at midday on Sunday in the Tyne Wear derby, which they suffered a 1-0 defeat in December. They won’t be back in action until April 11 due to the international break and the FA Cup quarter-finals.
