Diogo Jota and his brother Andre tragically died in a car accident in Spain last July, and the Liverpool hero’s wife Lute Cardoso has done everything she can to pay tribute to him.
Diogo Jota’s widow has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Liverpool forward ahead of the family’s first Father’s Day without him. On July 3 last year, the world of football was shaken to its core when Jota and his brother Andre were killed in a car accident in Spain.
Jota had returned to Liverpool for pre-season preparations after undergoing minor lung surgery in Porto, Portugal. He had originally planned to fly to the UK, but on doctor’s advice he opted to take the ferry from Santander, Spain.
The shocking incident occurred just 11 days after the Portuguese footballer married his long-term partner and mother of his three children, Lute Cardoso. He was 28 years old.
On Sunday, Rute, 29, took part in a Father’s Day 10km run in Porto. She wore the number 20 shirt in homage to the number Diogo wore for most of his career, including his time at Liverpool.

She then shared a photo of herself running on Instagram, and fans quickly filled the comments with messages of support for her and her late husband. “So proud of you,” one commenter wrote. Another said: “You can never run alone,” while another added: “Heaven is smiling on you.”
Rute completed the 10km in 52 minutes and 7 seconds. After reaching the finish line, she looked up and dedicated her run to the love of her life.
Father’s Day in the UK is on 21st June, but in Portugal it is on 19th March. The day is one of the emotional milestones the Jota family continues to face after Diogo’s death, including their upcoming wedding anniversary.
In addition to racing, Lute attended an event at the Arena Liga Portugal in Porto on Saturday. There, the final stage of Phase 2 of the Esports Championship was held with the participation of the FC Porto team. This team has direct links with Diogo and is currently partially managed by Root.
Earlier this month, Ruthe posted a family update about her recent vacation to Phuket, Thailand, with her children. She shared a photo of the two posing in front of an elephant with the caption: “Thank you Phuket for all the love.”
Jota’s family had previously visited Hong Kong, where Rute was given a touching book of condolences filled with heartfelt messages and handwritten eulogies for her late husband.
Last month, Root also honored Diogo on Valentine’s Day, February 14, by posting a photo of the two together set to the song “If I would have known” by Kyle Hume.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 for a fee of £41 million. During his time at the club, he played 182 games and scored 65 goals.
During his time at Anfield, he won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup, and won the Nations League twice with Portugal. Following his death, Liverpool officially retired the number 20 jersey.
