Chelsea lost to Newcastle in the Premier League, ending their Champions League hopes, but it was their pre-match antics and their manager’s ‘respect the ball’ comment that grabbed the headlines.
If Liam Rosenier wants to be taken seriously, he has an odd way of showing it. That’s what the crowd looked like around Chelsea referee Paul Tierney before the match. That’s totally weird.
And Rosenior stood on the touchline and allowed it. After the home defeat to Newcastle, he claimed his players wanted to “respect the ball” before defending.
Does Rosenior not have the resourcefulness to build a team that is a reflection of the manager? Does he not understand that it is patently wrong to think it is right for players to surround the referee before kick-off?
No one at Chelsea is taking responsibility for the ‘huddle’. That means no one wants to own it. There are good reasons for this.
Because this crowd farce only made Chelsea look like a selfish buffoon.

Like kids gathering around a fight in the school playground. How should we honor Rosenior now?
If he thinks the players were locked up and staring at the leather ball out of respect, he needs to shake his head a lot.
Rosenior is an insult to our intelligence. At the same time, I didn’t show anything of my own.
Cole Palmer had his arm around the referee. Enzo Fernandez was giggling to himself. Marc Cucurella looked confused. They’re grown men acting like a bunch of girls standing in a field playing “Ring A Ring O Roses.”
What do you do next after blowing off the dandelion’s head? Or is it just a game of conker during training?

Some people tend to think of Rosenior as a bit of a nerd. He dresses sharply, wears glasses, thinks outside the box, and speaks eloquently. But if he still thinks this pre-game huddle is a good idea, he’s way off base.
He insists it has nothing to do with intimidating opponents. It is designed to show unity as a group. Please, buddy.
Chelsea were all united in their defeat against Newcastle. How much respect did Chelsea have for the ball when Anthony Gordon picked it up from their own net after scoring the winning goal?
Coaches like Rosenior are always looking for a small profit. However, this kind of childish scheme cannot be tolerated and must stop.
Football continues to eat away at itself – and Rosenior’s reckless ways are feeding that beast. Because no one has the stomach to watch a Tierney turn into a Chelsea sandwich.
Rosenior perpetuates the idea that Chelsea are arrogant. There’s nothing arrogant about it.
His team suffered a heavy defeat in Paris last week and are now sixth in the Premier League standings. Below Liverpool, just in case. The team is said to be in crisis, and a new manager could be appointed before the start of next season.
Rosenior needs new ideas, not silly pre-game antics.
