They currently sit sixth in the Premier League, two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, with eight games remaining. While a fifth-place finish might be enough to qualify for the Champions League, Chelsea are in danger of missing out on qualification altogether, and given the level of investment under Clearlake, it would be a sporting and financial disappointment.
Sky Sports Switzerland claims that some influential figures within the hierarchy believe Rosenior may not be in charge next season.
Despite Chelsea’s desire for stability for the first time since the consortium led by Todd Boley and Behada Egbali took over, there are concerns within the club about his ability to lead the project long-term.
Pressure is mounting at Chelsea and the coming weeks are believed to determine the future of the project.
There are no ‘set in stone’ changes and despite these doubts, Rosenior remains focused on his immediate goal at Chelsea: leading them to the Champions League.
Rosseniol has led Chelsea to seven wins in nine games since taking over, but back-to-back defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle highlighted problems in west London.
The Blues were unable to break Eddie Howe’s side after conceding a goal in the first half, but some poor defending allowed Joe Willock to run in front of goal and square the ball for Anthony Gordon to tap in with ease.
After the match, Rosenior claimed the lapse at the back was a “tactical problem” and Chelsea needed to eliminate such costly mistakes.
“Well, there are tactical issues,” he admitted. “We press differently than most teams. This is a new way of pressing. We don’t press, we don’t cover where we’re supposed to. We don’t press. We don’t press. We should have pressed. We don’t press. We shouldn’t have pressed. We didn’t press. We didn’t press. We should have pressed. We didn’t press.”
“Mistakes happen. They didn’t have any. They didn’t have anything in the game and we gave them a goal. We’re talking about the press. I think the press forced Newcastle to kick long balls back at us and we controlled the game.”
“But in those moments we make mistakes. At the moment, I feel like all the mistakes we’re making are ending up in the back of the net, and we need to make sure we stop those mistakes.”
Rosenior added: “It was a really difficult day and a frustrating day because we didn’t get the result we wanted. But I think we still had consistency in our performance.”
