Richarlison’s late equalizer against relegation-threatened Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday ended Liverpool’s hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.
Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has called on his team-mates to “wake up” after sleepwalking after a 1-1 home draw with Tottenham. Szoboszlai, 25, gave Liverpool the lead with 19 minutes remaining, but Arne Slott’s side were unable to extend their lead and were made to pay the price in the dying embers.
Former Everton star Richarlison scored a late equaliser, giving Spurs a big point and ending a six-game losing streak in all competitions. As a result, Liverpool finished in 5th place, missing out on the chance to jump ahead of Aston Villa in 4th place.
There are five Champions League places in the Premier League for next season, but Liverpool remain at serious risk of missing out with eight games left. Chelsea are just one point behind the Reds, but Brentford could move within two points if they beat Wolves on Monday.
Szoboszlai expressed his displeasure in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, warning his team-mates that they could remain in the “Conference League” next season. “It’s very disappointing. I don’t know what happened,” said Liverpool’s goalscorer.

“At the last minute, and I don’t know how many times this season, we have to wake up. We’re feeling flat. We have to wake up, because if we keep going like this we should be happy in the conference league. I honestly don’t know why this is happening.”
“I thought we played very well in the first half, we controlled the whole game and created few chances apart from one or two headers. We couldn’t do the same in the second half. We have to sit together and stick together, even though this is the most difficult period.”
The Hungarian international also commented on the reaction at Anfield when the full-time whistle blew. “I didn’t hear the boos, but we can understand,” Szoboszlai admitted.

“We haven’t performed as well as we should. Last season we won the championship four games before the end so everyone was happy. They should be behind us.”
“Please support us in these difficult times. There is still time to show how much we want. We must unite and fight for the club.”
Liverpool resume play on Wednesday, hosting Galatasaray in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. Unless they can overturn the 1-0 defeat in Istanbul, the Reds will miss out on another trophy, leaving the FA Cup as their only competition for silver this season.
