Neil Warnock came out of retirement to take charge of Torquay two weeks ago, but the club are already close to a new manager but insist they want to avoid making decisions they “may later regret”

Neil Warnock is set to walk away from his job at Torquay, just two weeks after retiring to help the National League South side.

The former Sheffield United manager, now 77, decided to return to management two weeks ago, returning to Plainmoor, where he was manager in the early 1990s. Warnock’s return was a big shock, but with the club’s manager search in full swing, he could be gone as soon as he arrives.

Warnock has been an advisor to the club’s board since 2024 and began the role on an unpaid basis after Torquay sacked former manager Paul Wotton at the end of February. With Warnock appointed as manager, the club achieved 2 wins from 4 games and finished in 4th place.

However, Torquay are close to signing a new manager and the veteran manager admits he has not been given an opinion on what the next step should be.

“The interview process has already been done and they have in mind the kind of person and profile they want. It’s just a matter of the board taking it seriously. I know the candidates, but I told the board they need to do their due diligence,” he said.

“They’ve talked to me about this, but I haven’t really had an opinion. Now that they’ve made the decision to let Paul (Wotton) go, they need to appoint whoever they see fit. I’m sure they’ve been working really hard. They’ve been going around the last few days. Welcome to my world! They’ve been working hard to get interviews. Now we’ll have to wait and see.”

In a statement from the board on Saturday afternoon, the club admitted it wanted to bring in a new manager as soon as possible but wanted to avoid making a decision that it “might regret”.

“We know our supporters want clarity on the managerial situation, and so do we. The process of appointing a new manager is progressing rapidly, but this is a very important decision for Torquay United’s medium-term future. This is a decision we have to get right.”

“Whilst we would all like to see the matter resolved as soon as possible, it is more important that the board completes a thorough process and secures the best possible candidate for the football club, rather than rushing into a decision that we may later regret.”

Torquay were relegated from the Football League in 2014 and have been in non-league ever since. In 2012, they participated in the League Two play-offs, finishing in 7th and 5th place in consecutive years. They are now attempting to return to the fifth tier of England’s pyramid, the National League.
