Michael Carrick has given his thoughts on comments made by former teammate Paul Scholes during Manchester United’s first defeat as manager against Newcastle in a 10-a-side game.
Michael Carrick has insisted he is not offended by Paul Scholes’ criticism of the Manchester United side. Scholes came to the attention of supporters after United’s defeat to Newcastle with social media posts criticizing Carrick personally.
The former United midfielder wrote on Instagram: “Michael definitely feels something about him… United have been crap the last 4 games… tonight.” It came after 10-man Newcastle scored a late goal to win 2-1 at St James’ Park, suffering Carrick’s first defeat since taking over as caretaker manager in January.
Carrick has played alongside Scholes in United’s midfield for seven years, and some have suggested the comments may point to personal issues between the pair, who are currently on opposite sides of the manager-media feud.
Scholes later clarified that he did not intend to be offensive towards his former team-mate, but was simply sending a message to clear the air. And in a press conference before United’s Premier League game against Aston Villa, Carrick said it was all water under the bridge.

“I have nothing to say about that,” Carrick said. “I think that’s just the way we are when it comes to social media and things and captions and quotes and it can be taken in different ways.
“Calm down and understand what things really mean. So listen, there are different opinions out there, and that’s okay, people can have different opinions.
“Things just go from extreme to extreme and that’s the way it is, but I’m not worried about that. So I don’t think it’s a big deal either.”
This comes after Scholes said on The Good, the Bad and the Football podcast: “I never meant to attack Michael. Michael is one of the greatest people in football and he’s someone I would never want to offend.”
“I sent a message to Michael anyway. I went straight to him and said, ‘Look, I didn’t mean to upset you.’ I don’t think I needed to say that anyway, and he said himself that he wasn’t upset about it.”
“I think people just take it in a different way than it’s supposed to mean,” Scholes added. “All I wanted to say is, I don’t think they played that well in the last four games, but he’s still getting results.
“We had the greatest manager in the world and he always said that sometimes you need a little bit of luck. So with sending offs and things that happen during the game, sometimes you need a little bit of luck. That’s all I wanted to say.”
