Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs in June, just weeks after leading the Lilywhites to the Europa League title and their first silver medal in 17 years. The 60-year-old then took charge of Nottingham Forest until he was sacked again, and was working for UEFA at the Parc des Princes during Chelsea’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
The former Celtic manager was asked on TNT Sport if he was the least surprised person to witness Tottenham’s current predicament. He answered: “No, I wouldn’t say that.
“I’m still invested in the club because I’m attached to their players and I worked with them for two years. The last time I interacted with fans was 200,000 fans on the streets of London.”
“It’s tough to see. Obviously the players look pretty lost at the moment. There’s obviously pressure on them. It’s a really difficult time.”
“What happened last night made it all clear. It’s almost the worst-case scenario. Atlético, playing an away team, never has a performance level below 2. They are always at a really strong level. It was a scary start for them.”
Coach Postecoglou believes Tudor, who lost all four games he coached, must try to ease the burden on his team.
“No one can objectively say that these players are performing at the level they are capable of,” Postecoglou added. “We have to try to somehow relieve the pressure on them.
“Even last night I thought it was a huge chance for them, because they have done very well in the Champions League and are on the good side of the draw. Atletico away is tough, but we still have to get them back to Tottenham, but it felt like the pressure was there.”
“I think they were training on the pitch the night before, but I think it’s still pressure considering they were slipping down a lot. There’s a real sense of desperation in everything they do.
“Mentally you’re desperate and it manifests itself physically. You rush towards things, you rush things.
“It’s difficult to comment from the outside. For me, it’s just about instilling belief in the players. It’s not about what they can be, it’s about showing them what kind of players they are.”
